Silly Car Insurance Companies

I'm having a weird thing with my car insurance company. I have 12 cars, I work out of my home and my wife works 1 block away from our home. We don't travel very much - I run to the bank and post office every day (maybe 2 miles) and we do groceries and sometimes put maybe 25-30 miles on one of the cars on a Saturday.

So, I have provided very low miles driven for each car on my policy. I'm sure it affects my insurance cost.

Today, I get a letter from them demanding me explain why I am not averaging 12,000 miles per year, per car, like the rest of the world's drivers. Can't they count? 8 of the cars I have are on that same policy with them, so while they may not know about my others (which I have on classic/antique insurance), surely they can count the 8 (not to mention also a motorcycle).

Now I have to spend the hot afternoon going from car to car to write down the current odometer reading for them and I have to write an exception explanation for each of the cars for them.

I tried calling to explain, but the guy on the phone said three times, "Why do you have so many cars?"

None of his freaking business.

By their "estimations," I should be driving almost 150,000 miles per year (total) while working from my home and with all the stores and businesses that we frequent each being within a 2-3 mile radius. Oy vey.

LOL, that's what my son said to say.
In some ways it is true. Back in the day, people used to cruise the boulevard. I remember doing that myself. These days, not only is there never any time (self employed), but gasoline just costs too much to burn for no reason.

The thing is, based on the number of cars covered on their policy (and they don't even know about the other ones), you would think they could figure that out on their own. Heck, one of the cars that I have left on their policy, it's had it's motor out for the past several months. Not easy to drive a car when the engine's on a stand.

I think insurance should be changed so that it is the person who gets insured, not the car. Then, it would not matter if you had one car or 50. I mean, you can only drive one at a time anyways...

If someone drives a more expensive car daily then they pay more than someone with a beater. It's partially about the cost of repair/replacement, partly the driver's track record.

I would find a different company. It doesn't sound like they're bright enough to navigate the tricky waters of insurancy.

Who is your insurance provider?

Geico.

My classics are with Haverty (which is not the one with the issue).

(and I was sort of joking about the "insure the person not the car," but when you think about it... it's still the driver, regardless of the value of the car, that is the actual risk)

Interesting. .. we've got half dozen, but the one my wife drives gets 24k per year. We get reduced premiums for having low miles on a couple cars... (onstar sends a copy of the monthly OVD email to the ins company ).. wish I could get discounts like that on our older cars...

This is a little different, but the reason I am no longer with "the good hands people" is due to utter silliness... in my opinion.

A few years ago, I was making monthly payments for car insurance. One month, I did not receive a bill in the mail... but I made my "regular" payment anyhow. Same with the following month, and the month after that... no bill in the mail, but I paid anyhow.

Finally, I called them and asked how come I no longer received bills in the mail. They couldn't answer that, but they DID mention that, oh, by the way, we cancelled your policy a couple of months ago. Why? Because my monthly payment had risen by $2... yes, TWO DOLLARS, and my recent payments had NOT included the extra $2. So, I had been driving around, utterly uninsured, for a couple of months.

To hell with them... and you're welcome for the info about "the good hands people."

I dropped geico like a bad habit. That's none of their business how often you drive. Might be time to do some insurance shopping. Good luck.
