I concur- but in this current society I would not be surprised if the guy sued Autozone, the battery manufacturer and the maker of the wrench he used for the terminals.

It's your friends fault, sad to say. However, I'm not going to throw to much flak at the guy. He assumed the battery would be set up the same, since he gave them the M/M/Y, but he should have double checked something this important.
On a side note, I have learned that all the major Auto Parts store have everything listed on line. Prior to going in, I always look it up myself, get their part number and sku, and use that at the counter. Thus far, I have never been given the wrong part doing it that way. |

Not Autozone's fault. I get the wrong parts all the time (due to the parts places) and I don't install a part if it's not what is supposed to have arrived, always compare with the original first. And battery terminals is an obvious thing to check even if you're sure you have the right battery...

Whoa: Update! In spite of the unanimous decision that this court has come to (and, yes, I did inform John that the court of public opinion did NOT favor his side!), John still decided to go to AutoZone to see if they would compensate him for the damage done to his car (looks like around $300- $400 right now, but the work has not yet been completed/ invoiced).
The clerk remembered John, and remembered giving him the wrong battery. He explained that he was talking to another clerk, and they were both distracted, and he got the wrong battery. The clerk said that AutoZone would cover John's repairs. I'm astounded. I agree that AutoZone should not be liable, and maybe in a legal fight, they would win. However, in the interest of customer satisfaction (and maybe the resulting good publicity!), or, just to avoid a fight, they are going to cut John a check. |

A company with great customer service would step up like this regardless of fault.
For $400 bucks they did the right thing. Your friend will likely go back and low and behold you've created a thread that highlights their great customer service.

Wow surprised by Autozone on this one. I have had them sell me brake pads that were obviously someone else's take off, and then refuse to take them back saying they were my takeoffs. Hopefully they stick with paying for your friends repairs.

My personal opinion is that "fault" lies within the policy of the company as to where they say in writing their responsibility ends, but it's a moot point now.

I'm assuming you got the cheapest pads they offer and talked to a new guy who didn't want to get taken advantage of. Autozone has done nothing but great business with me, and being that I work at a shop they're especially generous with warranty, labor claims, etc. They're big enough to eat up a ton of stuff the same way Walmart does when they find a broken dipstick or lug nut (although more than half of Walmart's claims are actually their fault anyways) Honestly not surprised at all that Autozone would cover this. If they'd stop selling everything under a "Duralast" name then I'd be able to sell a lot more of their parts, that's their only issue. |
