I believe the real reason is the same as why you can't deactivate your airbags.

If you use AFM to get your EPA certification then you have to leave it and the programming intact all the time.

You could tie AFM to an ECO button that allowed the customer to select a more ECO friendly calibration. That is quite easy to do.

But with the Camaro for example AFM was needed to avoid the GG Tax otherwise you'd have the LS3 in the Automatic as well. So in this case you'd be cheating the government out of revenue.

Again, easy to do. But you would have to live with the lower EPA number and maybe worse, the GG Tax.

AFM can be turned off in the M7 C7 just by going to sport or track mode. Hopefully both trans options with the 6th gen SS will be the same.

I mean why not just have a button or a switch that activates or deactivates it when you want it on cars already equipped. like the L99. I know I don't want my AFM kicking in on main roads but if I was on the highway I probably wouldn't mind it. as it stands right now I have it disabled completely. but if I had the option to switch it on at will I probably utilize it.

Sorry, I thought it was clear. Because in order to avoid the GG tax, GM used the AFM feature to get EPA ratings. If that is the case you can't let the customer choose to deactivate it.

Now if GM had a level of FE that enabled great FE and wanted to just add a customer selectable feature..................very possible.
