Yep it all adds up. But if the camaro does lose "200lbs" a 530-550hp n/a engine would be a great choice. One can dream.

That engine has never been backed by an automatic from the factory and would get hit with a GG tax.
At that point who really cares about the gg tax? If that keeps you from buying it wasn't the car for you anyways. Plus even the "little" 5.2 in the gt350 has a gg tax so it'd be even amongst the competition.

I don't think the General is really into building cars that carry a GG tax.

Thats why the Gen 5 with an A6 got a DOD engine.

With CAFE getting tighter and tighter you need to make all your models get reasonable fuel economy.

The difference between a Camaro SS & ATS-V+, with regard to the GG tax & CAFE is price & volume. A 5th gen SS sells in the 30 to 40 grand range. A thousand-ish dollars of GG tax represents a decent price hike, and the fuel economy hit would put the car at a competitive disadvantage in its segment. No idea where a ATS-V+ would be priced, but it will probably be roughly triple what an SS goes for. At those prices, another grand or so isn't gong to stop someone from buying the car.

As for CAFE its all dependant on volume. GM probably expected something on the order of 25,000 (give or take a few thousand) automatic 5th gen SSs per year. They probably expect fewer than 1000 ATS-V+'s per year. Its impact on GM's CAFE score is going to be minimal.

I'm wondering if work on the NA LS7 successor that did not meet power and emissions goal continued. If their goal was 600+ hp NA for the Z06, I can see where they could have run into emissions issues. However they could have easily continued work on it and lowered the power goal to around 550hp which would also make it easier to meet emissions. Throw this into the Z/28 and save the LT4 for the ZL1.

If true there is more to this story.

The LS7, LS9 and the LS3, all with dry sump oiling, were all very expensive hand built engines. The LS7 and LS9 carried 5 figure premiums over the LS3 as crate engines.

Yes, possible they could have continued to develop the engine. Yes, it's possible it can meet future emissions. And yes, it's possible they are now mass producing it without a dry sump to get the costs way down. The last of those is more likely to be needed than the first two for this rumor to be true. Me? I wouldn't pay $80,000 for an LS7 powered ATS-V+ when for the same money you can get an LT4 powered CTS- V.

A better guess for the + would be a 200 pound weight reduction and for $5,000 add CC brakes.

Motor Authority:
Quote:
There is no ATS-V Plus in the works. That’s the official word from Cadillac’s communications manager David Caldwell, who told Motor Authority that reports of the V-8-powered ATS-V Plus, rumored on Motor Trend and elsewhere, won’t be happening—in no uncertain terms.
Well, that settles that ...
