Camaro vs. Mustang (sales)

I thought this was interesting....

WARNING: Graphic Content! 50 Years of Camaro vs. Mustang Sales Numbers in Living Color

May 20, 2015 at 3:26 pm by Kirk Seaman | Photography by Dick Kelley, Aaron Kiley, Greg Pajo, Robin Riggs, John Roe, and the Manufacturers

When Ford launched the Mustang in April 1964, it unknowingly fired the first salvo in what would become known as the Pony Car Wars. General Motors, unwilling to let Ford go unchallenged, fired back with the Chevrolet Camaro in September 1966. The 1967 Camaro met the Mustang in terms of performance, looks, and handling, yet the Ford dominated the sales charts for a decade.
While the cars would jockey for the title over the intervening years, the real winners all along were the enthusiasts. Competition, as ever, improved the breed, with cars that now boast more power and performance than ever could have been imagined some five decades ago.

being 100% honest I am kind of surprised that Camaro has only outsold mustang 10 times in their history.

i knew the Camaro figure's , but i didn't know the mustang's. i didn't realize it sold that many in 1967. it's weird they both fell off in the early 70s...and then both were big in the late 70s. Really odd for the mustang because they didn't even have a performance model in those years.
seriously you could have bought a Camaro or Firebird in 1979 and 1980 (and loads did, i think Pontiac sold 100,000 Trans Am models alone in 1979) but 369,000 people bought the lame 79' mustang ?!

Whats the deal with 2012?

I thought the Camaro was top selling since its re-release in '10?

Is this sonehow broken up into calandar year instead of model, or vice versa?

I think they are running calendar year, not model year.

I kinda think Firebird should have been included in the stats but it still would have been a pretty lopsided figure. What really stood out to me was 1996, 1998 and 2000. WOW. What THE F***. A 1996 GT was a complete dog vs the Z28 counterpart. It was even worse in 1998. People really didn't care about performance at that time it seems. I got my 01 Z28 brand new for only a couple thousand more than a GT that I test drove down the street so I don't think it was a price thing. Just goes to show people will value car looks above all else.
