I'm going to assume that NOT many ,if ANY of you commenting in here are black/African American, well I am. I served this country as did my grandfather in Vietnam. Wanna guess the HORROR stories he has and to how he was treated during and after his service? Wanna actually go there? I see a lot of people love playing pretend with revisionist history but I don't and will not! I served 12 years in the USMC before getting out before a second tour in Iraq in 2004. I completely UNDERTSTAND the messaging behind this because I am black, have studied history and have served. I doubt many of the folks so against this have served a day in their lives but are soooo patriotic. Amazingly funny. You may not like this particular display but there are many displays that people like me don't like but we have to deal with, IE the confederate flag and its revisionist history and playing pretend about its meaning and what it stands for, but I'm black and I'm supposed to just suck it up and let others have their freedoms to express as they please? How typical.... I don't even post here but this section and topics are completely one sided with NO balance whatsoever. Besides I love my Camaro!

I didn't serve, but my son did, for 10 years, 2 tours of Iraq. This isn't about black and white, or a confederate flag. It's about an American flag, our American flag. Tell us what the message is behind what she was saying and why she had to walk in the flag, because I don't understand that display at all. I'd be angry no matter what race, ethnicity, color or sex that person was.

KCdaMan -- Thank you for your service to our county!!! I am glad that you posted. I am white and have not served. Therefore, I am indebted to you. I do have family that served (which is the case for most people ).

My orignal post was in support for you. I do not fill it is right for someone (white, black, or other....) to ty to make their greivances know by using flag in this manner. I am not going to let this happen to you or anyone else that has served without speaking out against it. It is the least I can do.

I understand your disappointment of people displaying the confederate flag in a discriminatory manner. I can only hope that one person reads your post and it changes their way of thinking. It can happen one at a time. God bless you and your family.

Your camaro friend

John

I"m a VFW who served with that flag.

I'll defend your right to step on it.

Then I'll punch you in your ****ing mouth if I see it.

The British flag reference is just stupid. They ended up the enemy. The context doesn't need to be researched as it does not matter. If people stepping on our flag want to end up my enemy that is great. Let's do it.

It is their right to be morons. It is my right to understand how utterly stupid they are.

This about sums it up, you have the right to do it but that doesn't put a protective bubble around you. People are very patriotic around here and I don't think someone burning or walking on the American flag would go over well.

So because people are "very" patriotic that give them the right to do as they please because they don't agree with it? REALLY?!?!?!?! This attitude is dangerous and brazenly stupid. AS I said before for all the super patriots GO SIGN UP! GO fight for the flag you're vehemently defending online! I've grown tired of super patriots that HAVE NEVER, WILL NEVER do anything for this country besides talk a good game. As VET of the USMC of 12 yrs I strongly support EVERYONE having to give at least 2-3 years of their life to support of this country in some way. Whether it's through some sort of civic duty or enlisting in the armed forces. Let's see how many Ted Nugents are out there! He's a self proclaimed super patriot but weaseled his way out of the draft! I'm not accusing all of this, but there are definitely some....

The people that step on their own flag need to serve more than the people who think they are complete morons.

Why do you believe being patriotic gives anyone the right to do as they please. Can you elaborate on this? Are you saying because someone hasn't served they have no right to be offended by someone dessicrating the American flag? I'm just trying to see your point.

I just think its funny how everything turns into a racial matter, when the OP just wanted to thank anyone in the armed forces for the job they have done and protecting our freedoms. I think its amazing to see how younger generations think they can just do as they please and nothing happens. Stepping on the American Flag is probably one of the biggest displays of respect for this country that can happen. That flag stands for the freedom to be able to stand on that flag.

As for the military gentleman that turned this into a racial thing, I see you trying to make it equal to confederate flag. But as someone in the military I know many guys in there and they would never "understand" this behavior, they served for a reason and respect the flag and what stands for. You tell others to sign up and experience what its all about, but wouldnt that "super patriot attitude" gain more momentum because then they are really seeing what they are fighting for and how important it is to stand as one country?

SCdude37, congrats on you knowing people that don't feel as I do or have the same level of understanding. I'm NOT making it a racial thing IT IS a racial thing. For instance as a black man in America that has served this country, pay my taxes, family oriented with 2 black sons and a daughter I will never EVER feel the same as you do towards lets say, law enforcement. Unfortunately the histories and troubles aren't the same lived experiences for black folks as they are for my white brethren. The police for example hunted black folks during and after slavery, reinforced jim crow laws and segregation and have been FOUND guilty of sabotage and corruption against us for the last century alone. So tell me where I would and should have the same mindset as others who have not shared this living experience? I mean those ARE police office putting dogs on blacks protesting for equality correct? Police with the water hoses as well, the night sticks. These same black people and their families DO NOT share the same and nor should they play pretend as if everything is ok and nothing has ever happened. The stories my grandfather has from his Vietnam days to trying to get a VA LOAN for his upholstery business in NC in the 80's.

All I'm saying is a lived experience CANNOT be dismissed no matter how hard you guys try and make it seem as though we ( black) folks should just let it go. I don't want to get too political but Lee Atwater and the southern strategy have done a remarkable job on the minds and psyche of many. As far as your comment about respect, imagine how majority black people feel about that exact SAME word and put yourself in their lived experiences, you can't because it's impossible to pretend without going to the rhetorical.. I'd just do my best, move on, forget about it or whatever cliché response that are always thrown out. Its easy to say that when you never have and never will have a collective memory of disrespect.

It does not make a person special to place a flag on the ground and walk on it. We all have that freedom. It takes a real man or woman to sew that flag on their uniform and serve honorably.

Therefore, two facts hold true.

1 Regardless how many people walk on the flag it is still going to stand for freedom.

2 Anyone that desecrates the flag is going to be forever know as an ungrateful piece of crap.

John
I agree 100%.

23 years military service now retired. I agree, while I support your right to free speech and to protest, I feel that only a traitor would desecrate our flag and will respond accordingly. I will intervene.
