I know the Retina refers to the display. What I'm talking about is the coating that Apple uses on the display to reduce glare.

I don't believe Apple applies any coating to reduce glare. What they've done with newer versions of the retina displays is to bond (ie glue) the protective glass directly to the LCD. By removing the small amount of space that used to exist between the glass and the screen they've reduced the glare and sharpened the picture somewhat. In some of the first runs of those, the bonding agent turned yellow after usage. I believe they've had that fixed for a while so as long as you get a new one, you should be safe.
