I don't see how this officer thought his life was in danger and thought the use of deadly force was justified. He was running away, he had the mans information, he could have chased him or picked him up later. Also the man the ran from what the media reported had a warrant, why did he run? He most likely would have been out of jail in a few hours or days it was only for unpaid child support, still he never should have been shot for running. The police officer will rot in jail and two lives have been destroyed.

No, it could have been prevented if the guy didn't run.

edit: and I love the fact that under one of the photos it says "A video shows white South Carolina police Officer Michael Slager fatally shoot a black man, Walter Scott, in the back as he ran away."

Ok. I realize this is an internet article but if it's contents are even slightly true, Officer Slager is innocent and will be released. Using the footage already presented it appears that Officer Slager was shot by his own taser by Mr. Scott. When the first shot was fired you can see a wire running from the cartridge being dragged by Mr. Scott. If Officer Slager was unaware of the the location of the triggering mechanism than it's possible he felt he was about to be tased and incapacitated by a man who he just fought with. The man who recorded the shooting admitted to a fight between the two before the video was recorded. The distance of the first shot was no longer than the distance of the taser wire. All of this happened in a matter of seconds. Interesting information that should at the very least reduce the charges against the officer. I just hope that a fair trial is presented and the truth comes out, whatever that may be. There will now be mandated use of body cams by all North Charleston police officers so hopefully some good will still come of this tragedy.

Well question is .... Was shooting a person that was running in the back justified? Even after getting tased? Because the Officer life wasn't in danger when the man was running away. Is it legal for us to shoot someone in the back for using a taser on us when our life is clearly not in danger because the person is running away?

That is definitely the question that needs to be answered. I'm not going to begin to pretend that I'm familiar with proper police procedure but what would Scott have to do for Officer Slager to be able to defend himself? Shoot him first? Procedure be damned none of us can say how we would react in an extremely fast paced high pressure situation like that. Scott was obviously running away and judging the whole situation based on that one sequence of events does make the officer look bad. We still don't know the extent of the fight between them because it wasn't recorded by video. At what point does the officer have to show restraint once the danger starts to subside? Who can recognize an exact point of safety after being shot with your own taser by someone you just fought with? (Again, IF, that's what happened) The jury will decide that and if the evidence stacks up against the officer then the correct punishment will be handed down.

I definitely agree with you . I don't think your life is in danger of the officer if the guy isn't messing with him and running away. Now , if the cop had shot the guy when the guy was tasing him than that's fair play and than the cop is just defending himself to me.

I read the article this morning. Regardless of the outcome the MEDIA has put everyone in such a frenzy (as usual). This article brings out the question of whether the subject had the taser and was the officer tased, both of which justify the use of deadly force. Having said that, shooting him in the back while he was running a way (a potentially unarmed subject) was found unjustified by the Supreme Court (1985, Tennessee vs. Garner). It's a blurry line.... IMHO charging the officer with murder within a day of the shooting was purely administrative in order to quell the masses, they can drop the charges at any time.

This is going to be a drawn out, ugly trial.... I don't believe he'll do prison time for this.

I can think of bigger problems in the world, but let's stick to the topic.

Racial considerations would not be a factor and the guy would be alive IF the victim CHOSE to take care of his outstanding issues, or the victim CHOSE to NOT RUN away from the Po-Po. That was the point of my statement. Because he did neither, then this deplorable action took place.

I am not absolving the ex-cop of guilt. But at the same time you have to factor in the actions of the victim that led to the shooting.

Are you saying that if the victim had not run he would still be shot and killed? Really?

If you want to look at crime stats we can examine and see which is higher.

Black on Black crime
Black on White crime
White on Black crime

Any guess on how they will be ranked? Because if we go by statistics, the white guy is not your #1 person you look out for. You and I both know this.

Finally, when the police tell me to stop, I stop. I don't think well I am a white guy and I can run away and I won't get shot. The hell with that. Why risk my life by running unless I have nothing to live for. That is STUPID, and that is why I don't get shot at by the police.

Bottom line, don't run from the police regardless if you are in the right or wrong and you live.
