Insurance Non Renewal

Ugh so I am pretty pissed off about this. I was informed a little over a month ago that my current insurance company for my camaro (The Hartford) has decided not to renew my insurance. The reasons they cited was an accident claim I had in the camaro 2.5 years ago(not my fault) and a summons I got 3.5 years ago for "Failure to yield in intersection" (6 months before I even owned the camaro or made the policy with them, and honestly I don't even remember the ticket). I contacted my insurance broker about this and they said the Hartford wont write to anyone under 30 (I'm 26) with two or more "incidents" on their record(but I'm renewing not getting a new policy). But when I asked why would they have renewed it two year ago and last year but not this year and they had no answer other than repeating what they just said.

So then my broker went to find me a new policy, my old coverage was for 500,000/500,000/500,000 and i was paying $3,018 a year.

She come back and tells me that Travelers wont write to me due to the non renewal. Then she comes back ant tells me that Utica National Insurance Group would write me the same coverage as I previously had but for $2,881 (which I thought great, the same coverage I had for less). Or I could go with Maidstone Insurance company for 250,000/500,000/50,000 for $2,616.

So I said to go ahead and go with Utica. Now they've come back and said that Utica has changed their minds and doesn't want to write to me because of the non renewal either. So now I am only left with Maidstone as a choice. I would like to have the same coverage that I had but this is very frustrating. No company seems to want to write for someone that had a non renewal even though this non renewal to me seems completely without cause. Why they would decide to non renew me this year when I had 1 claim that wasn't my fault 2.5 years ago, and a failure to yield 3.5 years ago (before I even owned the car) and otherwise have a perfect driving record seems completely unjustified to me.

Has anyone else even had to go through this?

Oh and I even took a defensive driving course back when I got that summons just for the insurance reduction

Have you tried getting insurance from one of the big companies like geico or all state?

If you owned an apartment complex and you didn't want the renter any longer for whatever reason, and the lease comes due, would you renew it because HE wanted you to?

Insurance companies are about risk management for them to make money. Unfortunately, you fit in their "window" of higher risk. One way to avoid risk is not renew higher risk drivers. They're not only insuring the car, they're insuring YOU, as a behavioral component of risk. Young person, high powered car = higher risk of them paying out because of STATISTICS. They don't owe you an insurance policy or have to offer you one (unless local law says so, but usually at a high price).

If that's their policy of not renewing for those sort of things, you won't have much recourse. If they do it to everyone in your situation, they're not discriminating. Have you called Hartford yourself? An insurance broker who handles multiple policies don't usually care about fixing your issues. They just want to sell you insurance.

Maybe you were the Milton Waddams of the movie "Office Space". Guy was supposed to get laid off two years earlier, but a glitch kept him on the payroll. They "fixed the glitch."

In this case, perhaps they overlooked the information or somehow didn't have all the information until recently. Who knows?

Good luck in your insurance search.

State Farm dropped me about 22 years ago, in a VERY similar situation. I called Nationwide. They were not only happy to have me - my insurance was cheaper with identical coverage!!! I have been with them ever since. So, you'll find a company to insure you - I would start with Nationwide.

Sometimes a company will tighten their rules for renewal and as policies come up for renewal they review all past driving records. That may have caught you. I know State Farm only goes back 3 years.
My Brother in law had several DUIs and has had his license revoked now for several years. He is just now getting it back and he bought my Saturn Vue from us. State Farm is charging him $600 every 6 months on it for full coverage.

The Hartford dumped me in 1985 because I had a claim. I was rear ended at a red light by an uninsured motorist. I had been with the Hartford for about 10 years. Also paying the uninsured motorist premium. Since then I have talk hundreds of people out of their (Hartford's) insurance....just saying

How about this? Geico, USAA if your eligible, Nationwide, Progressive, yadda yadda yadda. Bottom line is you can get insurance its a matter of you looking outside of your current choice of people.

When I was 18 I had allstate and totaled a car. By the time I was 21 I got alot of speeding tickets and had high risk insurance. Since then I switched to a different company and last year decided to price shop so I checked with allstate and they turned me away. Now I am 48 and all this was 30 years ago....lol...I haven't had a ticket or at fault accident in 25 years. That's ok though I am happy with who I have now and no one else is low enough to make me want to switch.

You can also file a complaint with your state dept of insurance and have Hartford explain their decision if you don't get resolution over the phone. Heck call local TV and have them do a report on them.

I know advice is free, but I fail to see the complaint here. They didn't drop him, they simply did not tender a renewal, which they are entirely within their rights to do (which I'm 99% sure they can do legally, subject to local laws). I'd hate to see someone waste their time on a complaint that doesn't exist or try and drag in a TV reporter for something that isn't anything.

I advise a broader sweep of the insurance companies to get the coverage/rates needed.

All State is fickle, and I think they do a soft pull on your credit as well as driving/claims history to determine worthiness. So if your credit has any blemishes you won't likely get approved even with a spotless driving record.

They have the right to not renew him, but they don't have the right to report incorrect information that the industry will pick up and lead to him not being able to get insurance at all. We had a similar situation with one of our houses recently. They hired some fly-by-night inspection company who claimed we had missing siding on the house. I finally got a copy of the report and it was not siding, but flashing that I was in the process of replacing (nights and weekends after work). I sent them photos and an explanation, but they just quit responding. I decided to just move all our houses to another insurance company, but no one would pick that one up with the non-renewal letter against it. One agent told me to let them know I was going to file a complaint with the state insurance board. The same day I told them that the issue was resolved.

OP, I'm not sure you can prove their reasons for denying the renewal are just or not. It is worth the try, though. Reach out to your state insurance board and ask them for advice. Once you get the non-renewal issue cleared up, then you should have plenty of other companies that will provide you a policy.
