Don't misunderstand me. In my agreement with the post prior to mine, I still think GMC can go. I am also stating that Hummer can go as well. Pontiac has the G5,6 & 8. Chevy can have its range of various SUVs with the H3 lineup scattered among them and topping out with the H1.

Well, I had a super long post all ready then my browser had to close and I lost it all

Basically, Hummer is no longer needed and infringes on GMC. I have no idea what Saturn is supposed to be anymore so I think they could be ditched.

Saab is fairly unique and sells well enough in its home market.

Daewoo forms the bread and butter of sales for GM worldwide, GM would be crazy to kill them off.

Buick is distinct from Caddy in that they are supposed to be classy, elegant, and timeless. Caddy is bold and modern. The two can co-exist.

Pontiac should never share base trim with cars on the same platform in the same market, in those cases let Pontiacs be GT and GXP. This will shift sales to Chevy (or other) for economical models, and give Pontiac a performance image.

GMC will do very well if 3 things happen. 1 get rid of the Hummer brand, perhaps make it a offroad package for GMC's (not sure if that will work: Yukon Hummer edition, oh well). 2 ditch any Cadillac SUV's, the GMC Denali line makes a good substitute. 3 get rid of the duplicates in the following list (my keepers are in bold): Suburban/Yukon XL, Tahoe/Yukon, Colarado/Canyon, Traverse/Acadia, Trailblazer/Envoy. Plus the Sierra, something like the XT concept, and their vans they should do well.

There's so many GM brand names that don't really accomplish much, BUT, they do accomplish one thing: Marketing. If there were only one or two brands, sales wouldn't consolidate into those brands; they'd just sell less. People know that each brand is a GM, but they still get most of the treatment of a separate brand.

Some brands could really do with getting back to their roots...

Chevrolet -- still the everyman's car. I wouldn't call it the "Flagship" line, that'd be Cadillac. Keep.

Buick -- Trying to get a new image, because people don't want the old Buick stereotype, and the "old people" demographic is no longer a profitable market. It's too bad, the market does need a few cars matching the old Buick stereotype. I'd like to see them get back to their roots, but the most healthy thing might be to let Buick die like Oldsmobile did.

Cadillac -- Appears to be a success story. They've got the new image that Buick needs. Keep.

Pontiac -- suffers from lack of purpose and uninspiring cars, but that's not how Pontiac sells; they sell from marketing. Pontiac is a marketing powerhouse and as long as they can ride on that strength, they're worth keeping.

Saab -- Brings diversity to GM. Gives GM a brand that is far different from all their others, a foot in the door in a very different market. As long as they can stay different from the rest of GM, great. It's important to have something very different for when the tide turns. Keep.

Saturn -- REALLY needs to get back to its roots! The original Saturn concept really worked, and would work even better now, IMO. While most of society has left behind that feel-good hippie attitude that Saturn was doing (as well as selling on the "no bullshit" attitude), there's quite a lot of people who don't want more of the same noise/power/hardcore attitude that is so popular now. Saturn has diluted what they had. Especially now, they should sell lightweight, practical, fuel efficient cars with less power (like the original Saturns), for those who want that sort of thing. Keep.

Hummer -- Serves a niche. If they could get back to their roots, they'd be a keeper. As is, cut the fat.

GMC -- Too perfectly duplicated with Chevy. If GMC sales were combined with the sales of the same models under the Chevy nameplate, the numbers would be huge. The big question is, is the GMC marketing tool an important part of those sales? I don't think anywhere near as many would sell if they were only one brand.

Daewoo -- Why is that name still alive? Delete!

Note: If I've gored anybody's ox...just look at my sig. I LOVE my GMC and my Buick, but I accept reality on the brand names.

First time poster, long time lurker. I figured id express my oppinion before this thread became dead and lost.

Hummer isnt a big deal to the consumers. it fits a very niche market that is dieing, but hummer has already brought the answer to their own problem. They have asked GM to make them their diesel brand. Mercedes-Benz advertises their Blue Line (their line of diesel vehicles) as 20-40% more fuel efficient than their gasoline counterparts. to keep hummer in the GM green immage this is where they need to go. they also need to review their line up. right now the H2s essentually suck, they need something to make it more comprable to the modern market. the H3 would be fixed once they obtain the power/efficiency of a diesel under the hood. Hummer really doesnt need to play the cost field because they are already seen as higher up on the totem pole. then hummer needs an H4, something to answer the super efficient market, much like the ford escape. i immagine an H4 following the footsteps of the Volt in a way, put everything in backwards. rear engine has certain advantages and can help make a big heavy SUV put power where it needs it, over the driving wheels. then las but not least hummer needs something iconic. something all the toyota FJs and jeep wranglers will drool over. i immagine an H5 as the fit to this market, a small, 2 door hi-po off road machine (off road is what hummer is all about lets give them something to flaunt). they could also make this a VERY unique vehicle by making it rear engined 6 cyl diesel, AWD, the works. anybody who has seen sand rails, and racing trucks will know that this works wonders in the offroad world. of course everything except the H3-4 will be small production. the other models will just be for consumers to drool about (much like buying a v6 drool over v8s).

Daewoo on the other hand can leave the american market. keep them for domination in asia, but dont bother with the nameplate over here in the states.

Mind you this is just one way that Hummer could be fixed, and i was just giving a little thought on the subject of what i think it would take to save hummer from just dropping off the face of the planet.

Actually Buick is the top selling car in China and has two new killer looking cars both inside and out coming out based on the concepts with one of them to debut in China. Thats what I heard.

65 people voted and only 49 think we should keep Chevrolet. Does anyone else think that that is especially wrong on a Chevy website?

I don't know about anyone else, but I read the poll wrong and didn't know it was multiple choice. And I thought we were voting on which brand to ditch (I actually picked GMC)

It would be a sad day for automotives in general if they kill off Pontiac. Although if they turn it into the "domestic BMW" division they pretty much will anyway.
