NEW YORK – Nissan today unveiled the all-new Nissan Maxima during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show. Making the presentation was Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn, who addressed a range of topics including Nissan's $10.1 billion investment in the U.S. in the past three decades.

The dramatically styled 2016 Maxima, created by driving enthusiasts for driving enthusiasts, looks like nothing else on the road today – and drives like nothing in the segment. It not only resets Maxima's iconic "4-Door Sports Car" positioning, it sets a new standard for style, performance and technology in the large sedan segment.

Maxima's styling showcases Nissan's new design language –including V-Motion front end, signature boomerang lights, kick-up C-pillars and unique floating roof appearance. Inside, Maxima's premium class-above, bespoke interior is anchored by a driver's cockpit that rivals luxury vehicles.

The new Maxima's 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 has been redesigned with more than 60 percent new parts (compared to the previous generation 3.5-liter V6). With 300 horsepower, Maxima has a high specific output of 85.7 horsepower/liter. The revised engine helps Maxima achieve an anticipated 15 percent increase in highway fuel economy to an EPA estimated 30 miles per gallon**.

Complementing the revised powerplant is a new, performance-oriented Xtronic transmission featuring a wider ratio range, which allows for stronger acceleration from a standing start and an all-new D-Step shifting logic that provides rapid shifts at high throttle openings.

Maxima's next-generation technology features include a standard NissanConnectSM with navigation, featuring an 8.0-inch touch-screen display, along with SiriusXM® Satellite Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link™ applications (Sirius XM subscription required, sold separately), Online Search with Google® and other connectivity features. The NissanConnect system is paired with a standard 7.0-inch Advanced Drive Assist Display (ADAD) within the instrument cluster.

The new Maxima also offers an extensive range of safety, security and driving aids, including Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Forward Emergency Braking (FEB), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) and Blind Spot Warning (BSW). These features are available on Maxima SL, SR and Platinum grades. Maxima also offers an available Driver Attention Alert (DAA) system***, which monitors steering input patterns to establish a baseline and helps alert the driver when drowsy or inattentive driving is detected (Maxima Platinum only).

The all-new Maxima, now offered in five grade levels including new SL, SR and Platinum grades, goes on sale in early summer 2015 with a $32,410 starting MSRP* – including standard NissanConnect with navigation, 8.0-inch touch-screen display, Remote Engine Start, RearView Monitor and more.

First Look: 2016 Nissan Maxima
Lighter, Bolder, Smarter

The Nissan Maxima has seen little change since the current generation debuted for the 2009 model year. Now, Nissan is introducing a next-generation model that promises better fuel economy, a more athletic road demeanor, and a driver-focused interior.

Nissan calls the new Maxima a "virtual clone" of the Sport Sedan Concept that came out in January, and although we don't think the two models look exactly alike, we definitely see the inspiration. The 2016 Maxima features a V-Motion grille flanked by boomerang-style headlights with standard LED DRLs. Thanks to its blacked-out A-pillars, the Maxima adopts a floating roof appearance that creates a wraparound canopy. In back there are strong character lines and LED rear parking lights. Overall, the new Maxima is 1.3 inches lower and 2.2 inches longer than the seventh-generation Maxima.

Under the hood, look for a heartier 3.5-liter V-6 with 300 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque. This engine has been redesigned with more than 60 percent new parts and should help increase fuel economy for an unofficial target EPA rating of 22/30 mpg. A new Xtronic transmission with a wider gear ratio range and new shifting logic should improve acceleration from a start and while exiting a corner. Perhaps even more important is a completely new chassis that sheds 82 pounds from the previous model, helping to boost performance further.

The Maxima also benefits from a Drive Mode Selector that adjusts the ride experience to the driver's command. In Sport mode, steering weight and throttle response increase, and new active sound enhancement amplifies the engine note to the driver's ear. Normally, however, the new Maxima is supposed to run quietly thanks to laminated glass and active noise cancellation that drown out road noise.

Peek inside the cabin, and you'll see a new ergonomically designed cockpit. The center stack is pointed 7 degrees toward the driver, and a floating console sits higher than in the old Maxima and puts important controls such as push-button start within easy reach. Padded materials give the Maxima a premium feel, and a flat-bottom steering wheel adds sporty appeal.

The 2016 Nissan Maxima will be available in five trims, including a new performance-oriented SR trim. Even the base Maxima S is well-equipped; it now comes standard with NissanConnect navigation and an 8-inch display. Other standard features include remote engine start via Intelligent Key, online search with Google, an eight-way power driver's seat, a four-way power passenger's seat, dual-zone climate control, HomeLink, and Sirius XM satellite radio. Stepping up to the SV nets leather-appointed seating, heated front seats, driver lumbar support, parking sensors, and more. The SL brings a dual panoramic moonroof, 11-speaker Bose sound system, and a number of safety features such as forward emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, and blind-spot monitor.

The SR joins the upper trim levels. It brings a sport-tuned suspension, front chassis performance damper, Ascot leather seats with diamond-quilted Alcantara inserts, paddle shifters, aluminum sport pedals, and upgraded 19-inch wheels. At the top of the lineup sits the Platinum, which comes with driver memory, power tilting and telescoping steering column with easy access feature, Around View Monitor with moving object detection, mahogany wood-tone finish accents, and other premium extras. No optional packages are offered on the Maxima; instead, buyers can add accessories such as splash guards, spoilers, unique tires, and a few other extras.

The 2016 Nissan Maxima goes on sale this summer and starts at $33,235, including an $825 destination fee. This makes it more than $1,000 more expensive than the 2014 Maxima, which is expected given all the radical changes the new model has in store. In its new generation, the Maxima now has a chance to transform itself from an also-ran model to a uniquely athletic competitor in the large-sedan category.

2016 Nissan Maxima: Semi-Luxurious and Proud of It

Large semi-premium sedans serve two purposes. On rental lots, they attract expense-account customers looking to upgrade from a mid-size. At work, they’re a P.C. statement for people who want all the fancy equipment but not the interoffice sneers brought on by a luxury badge. That guy at the office driving a Toyota Avalon or a Chrysler 300 is probably earning a lot more than you, though you’d never envy his car. Same goes for the Nissan Maxima.

It’s fair to say that even Nissan hasn’t paid much attention to the Maxima lately. Once a big kahuna in the Nissan lineup, the Maxima has languished in recent years. We haven’t tested one since 2008, the last time Nissan overhauled its flagship sedan. Since then, it received a midcycle refresh for 2012 that was so subtle we didn't even write about it. But when the 2016 Maxima made a cameo in Nissan’s Super Bowl commercial, we set down our beers and took notice.

Every Design Trend, All in One Place
Styled with the same dramatic, sweeping fashion as last year’s Sport Sedan Concept, the new Maxima is either banging hot or bound to age fast. There’s a lot going on, but design chief Shiro Nakamura at least should be toasted for unbuttoning the Maxima’s oxford shirt and exposing raw flesh. Like the new Murano, the Maxima’s visual stimulation never lets up: Boomerang-style lights, double U-shaped grilles, intersecting creases, swooping chrome, blacked-out pillars, bulges, and quarter-panel flares attack the eyes. While Nakamura’s team threw every conceivable trend at the new Maxima, it’s defiantly Nissan and definitely not cobbled from generic European car parts.

Some standout details: The floating, canopy-style greenhouse with its blacked-out C-pillar is said to have been inspired by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Designers also tilted the center stack seven degrees toward the driver, as they did for the GT-R, and aped Jaguar’s pulsating ignition button. They even etched 4DSC (“4-Door Sports Car”) into the headlamps and taillamps, echoing the 4DSC window stickers on the circa-1990 Maxima.

FWD and CVT—Two Things We Don’t Expect in a Four-Door Sports Car
In an age when you can get a stick shift in a Buick and Acuras offer all-wheel torque vectoring, Nissan’s four-door sports car comes with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable automatic transmission. The revised 3.5-liter V-6 churns out 300 horsepower (up 10) and the same 261 lb-ft of torque, while the Xtronic CVT gains a wider ratio spread, more aggressive fake shifts, and an rpm-hold function when the car senses hard cornering. Pretty tame stuff, although fuel economy improves, Nissan says, from 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway to 22/30 mpg.

Nissan’s Drive Mode Selector offers a choice between normal and sport settings for steering effort, throttle sensitivity, transmission tuning, and the piped-in engine noise. The suspension is damper-struts up front and multilinks at the rear—an SR performance trim level stiffens the dampers and the front anti-roll bar. The available Active Ride Control doesn’t perform any active dampening but instead brakes individual wheels to settle the chassis over bumps and dips.

The new Maxima utilizes more high-strength steel, which helps provide 25-percent greater torsional rigidity. Nissan engineers were able to trim up to 82 pounds, despite this eighth-generation Maxima being a bit larger than its predecessor. The car is 2.2 inches longer (at 192.8 inches) and 1.3 inches lower, while the width (73.2 inches) and 109.3-inch wheelbase are identical to the outgoing car’s. Head-, shoulder-, and legroom are up by fractions of an inch for front passengers, although some measurements shrink a bit for folks in the back.

Maximum Gizmos, No Options
When we drove a 1984 Datsun Maxima and heard a recorded voice chiding us to turn off the lights, we pleaded with automakers to “get over their childish fascination with the bells-and*whistles potential of automotive electronics and simply confine themselves to making cars work better.” Thirty-two years later, the 2016 Maxima remains enamored of tech gizmos. For example, swiping left on the eight-inch touch screen while in the navigation menu will make directions suddenly appear on the seven-inch screen in the instrument panel. The top-level Maxima Platinum also debuts NissanConnect Services, a full suite of telematics that includes remote locking, remote start, location mapping, crash alerts, maintenance reminders, and live concierge services, all accessible within the car or via a smartphone app. Four more Nissan models will see the system this year. Pricing and complimentary subscriptions haven’t been announced.

In lieu of an options list, Maxima models are now divided into five trim levels, all of which will go on sale in June. The S starts things off at $33,235—$1120 more than the outgoing model—and comes standard with navigation, those dual eight- and seven-inch touch screens, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, 18-inch wheels, an eight-way power driver’s seat, and a four-way power passenger’s seat. The $35,215 SV brings leather, heated seats, power lumbar, front and rear parking sensors, and heated side-view mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Driver assist and active safety features such as forward-collision alert, auto-braking, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control appear on SL models ($37,715) and above. This trim level also comes with a heated steering wheel, an 11-speaker Bose stereo with active noise cancellation, and a dual-panel sunroof.

The $38,495 SR adds diamond-stitched faux-suede trim and semi-aniline leather seats, aluminum pedals, paddle shifters, 19-inch wheels, and LED low-beam headlamps. Nissan’s Around View 360-degree camera system is reserved for the top-level Platinum—strange, since it’s available on the lowly Versa. The $40,685 Platinum also gets memory settings for the driver’s seat, a power rear-window shade, rain-sensing wipers, and a Benz-style driver-drowsiness monitor.

Nissan stuffed the new Maxima with toys, but we were expecting a spicier powertrain and chassis to match the wild exterior. With 300 horsepower going to the front wheels, torque steer is a major concern, and while it’s somewhat tolerable on a hot hatch, it’s really not acceptable on an upscale car that will crest $40,000. Even if the Maxima can’t fool us that it’s a sports car, it will probably fool the neighbors into thinking that you’re living modestly with a Nissan sedan when you’re in fact living in high-tech style.
