McLAREN REPORTS RECORD SALES FOR 2014
Quote:
McLaren Automotive, maker of the P1 supercar, has announced record sales for 2014 calendar year. McLaren has posted improved sales in every year since launching in 2010.

McLaren sold 1,648 vehicles last year, marking a 21 percent improvement over 2013. The vast majority of those sales, around 1,400, were accounted for by the 650S Coupe and Spider. However, a few examples of the outgoing 12C were also included in the mix.

McLaren delivered 248 examples of the P1 during 2014, representing about two-thirds of the car's planned 375-unit production run.

"These latest results highlight that McLaren Automotive continues to push boundaries and set records year-on-year, and are testament to the energy and professionalism of the teams in woking and around the world, including our retail partners," said Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive. "The past 12 months have seen the launch of the 650S in both Coupe and Spider form, and the first full year of McLaren P1 production, and sees the third consecutive year of growth for the brand which is a fantastic achievement."

North America was McLaren's largest single market in 2014, accounting for more than 290 deliveries. The Asia-Pacific market remained a strong one for McLaren, with sales increasing by 80 percent.

McLaren should see continued success in 2015 with the British automaker planning to launch its most obtainable model to date, the Sports Series. That vehicle will be introduced at the New York auto show in April.

McLaren Automotive races ahead
Quote:
-More than 1,600 vehicles delivered, including 248 examples of the McLaren P1™, marking the company’s strongest year-to-date
-Asia-Pacific region achieves growth of 80 per cent
-14 new retailers opened bringing the global network to 68, across 30 markets

McLaren Automotive ended 2014 with record sales as it has done every year since the company began production of luxury supercars in 2010. A total of 1,648 vehicles were delivered to customers around the world, an increase of 21 per cent over 2013 which was the company’s first year of profitability. In addition another 14 new retail locations were added bringing McLaren’s total global sales network to 68 sites.

Following the international reveal of the 650S in Coupé and Spider form at the Geneva Motor Show where the two models were launched simultaneously, strong demand for McLaren’s core model range saw sales reach 1,400 units including some examples of the outgoing 12C. In addition, 248 examples of the 916PS petrol-electric McLaren P1™ were delivered to customers – around two thirds of the car’s total 375 unit production run.

McLaren’s network of retailers grew to cover 30 markets with the additions of Chile, Scotland and Thailand. New sales outlets were also opened in existing markets, most notably Calabasas, Cape Town, Changsha, Chongqing, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Kunming, Melbourne, Nanjing, Shenzhen and Tianjin. More development is planned in 2015.

Growth was recorded across all four of McLaren’s regional business units. The Asia-Pacific region saw the biggest rise with sales increasing by 80 per cent over 2013 with 11 new retail locations across the region helping to fuel this growth. The North American market remained McLaren’s largest market accounting for more than 30 per cent of overall sales, while sales in both Europe and the Middle East grew year-on-year by 10 per cent and nine per cent respectively.

McLaren Automotive continues to invest significantly in research and development for new models. 2015 will see the launch of the McLaren’s most attainable model yet, the new Sports Series which will debut at the New York International Auto Show in April. At the top of its range, the strictly limited edition track-only McLaren P1™ GTR will also enter production after the final road-going McLaren P1™ has been built.

Commenting on the 2014 year end performance, Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive explained: ‘These latest results highlight that McLaren Automotive continues to push boundaries and set records year-on-year, and are testament to the energy and professionalism of the teams in Woking and around the world, including our retail partners. The past 12 months have seen the launch of the 650S in both coupé and Spider form, and the first full year of McLaren P1™ production, and sees the third consecutive year of growth for the brand which is a fantastic achievement.

‘Since the opening of the first retailer in June 2011, McLaren has established a world-class network of retailers, with 14 key locations added in 2014, all of which continue to set benchmarks in the industry the world over. Add to this a range of groundbreaking models, shortly to be completed with the launch of the Sports Series later this year, and 2015 looks set to be another strong year for McLaren.’

U.S. Small And Midsize Luxury Car Sales - 2014 Year End

Quote:
Combined, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Lexus ES sold slightly more often in the United States than the BMW 3-Series/4-Series lineup.

The C-Class is America's second-best-selling premium brand car; the ES ranks third.

Yet so dominant is the 3-Series that it sells about as often as its two most popular alternatives combined. Indeed, in more direct rival terms, the C-Class and Audi A4 didn't combine to sell nearly as often as the BMW in 2014. (The ES is really targeting a different buyer.)

BMW continues to expand its range of offerings under the 3 and 4-Series' banners. There are now multiple four-door options, for example. Lacking some of the sharpness of older 3-Series', the car continues to trade on its reputation for sportiness while catering to the comfort-minded whims of thousands of buyers.

It's working.

For the bigger 5-Series and 7-Series, however, BMW's methods have not met with massive U.S. success of late. After levelling off in 2013, 5-Series volume fell 7% in the United States in 2014, a year in which the auto industry produced 6% gains and the car market itself improved by nearly 2%. (Unable to match the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, 7-Series volume was down 2% in 2014 after falling in 2011, 2012, and 2013.) BMW has also forged ahead with a two-door approach to the entry-level market. As Mercedes-Benz sold 27,365 CLAs in 2014 and Audi sold 22,250 A3s, BMW sold 7345 copies of the 2-Series.

Nevertheless, BMW USA set an annual sales record in 2014. Thank the 3-Series, and thank the SAVs. BMWs five-model X lineup was up 8%, forming just under one-third of all BMW sales.

U.S. Small And Midsize Luxury SUV Sales - 2014 Year End

Quote:
Growth in America's small luxury SUV/crossover arena occurred in 2014 with and without the addition of new faces. Subtract the BMW X4, Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC, and Porsche Macan from the equation and continuing nameplates still generated a 5% increase in 2014.

However, with assistance from newcomers - vehicles which only help to draw attention to the segment as a whole - sales shot up by more than 35,000 units to 220,125.

That doesn't take into account the smallest newcomers from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The Q3 and GLA joined the BMW X1 in the entry-level market, helping to drive sales of these compact luxury crossovers up 26% despite the X1's decline; despite coming late to the party. (The Q3 arrived in August; the GLA in September.)

The Acura RDX was America's top-selling small luxury utility vehicle in the 2014 calendar year. Though Acura lacks the premium standing of some of the RDX's rivals, that hasn't hurt the RDX over the last few years. RDX volume has increased in five consecutive years.

America's top-selling premium utility vehicle overall, however, is the far more popular Lexus RX. And even in December, with new competition in Lexus's own showroom, the RX produced a 3.5% year-over-year sales gain.

The NX, in its first full month, generated 2905 sales, enough to outsell all small luxury utility vehicles except the RDX and Audi Q5.

U.S. Large Luxury SUV Sales - 2014 Year End
Quote:
U.S. sales of Cadillac's regular-wheelbase Escalade increased in 2014 to the highest level since 2008. The Escalade's Suburban-based long-wheelbase version, the ESV, did the same. Together, they outsold the Lincoln Navigator and Navigator L by more than 20,000 units.

The Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Navigator certainly weren't the only full-size luxury SUVs to report improved sales in 2014. The Land Rover Range Rover posted a 609-unit gain. Toyota's Land Cruiser was up by a modest 2.5%.

And Mercedes-Benz's G-Class, the SUV with the highest base price in America, was up 24% to 3090. 375 G-Wagens were sold in the final month of 2014 alone, the Mercedes-Benz brand's best-ever December.

The MKZ would compete with the XTS no? Front-wheel drive people haulers cross-shopped with Lexus ES, and LaCrosse. Lincoln doesn't offer luxury sport sedans.

I was just looking at the chart that lumped them into small/midsize luxury.

Wouldn't the Lincoln MKS would better compete with the XTS because they are both full size right? To which the XTS outsold the Lincoln very easily

And totally agree with you that no one probably cross shopped the two.

I was just kind of shocked that they sold as many MKZ's as they did

I guess the MKZ just looks more spacious to me. But you're right the MKS would be more XTS sized. The MKZ looks sharp and is priced right. I'm still not sold on the front end but from every other angle the car looks sharp. I'm surprised the XTS has done as well as it has. I suspect mostly livery and legacy Cadillac customer purchases who dislike the stiff ride of the CTS
