First of all, Glocks do, in fact, have a real safety.
They have three (3) internal safeties.

Second, as stated by Mr_Draco above, when seconds count....

If you are just carrying because you think it makes you cool, then no, do not chamber a round. Also, please reevaluate your life.

If you actually need a weapon, what is the point of needing it and not having it ready?

This is bullshit. Also brandishing.

If you get used to carrying without a round in the chamber, what happens when a scenario turns real. You might freeze and then remember you have to rack the slide back. In that split second you or someone else could have been shot.

The big thing that I see here is people underestimate others. Most shootings are from people who do not understand firearms as much as military/law enforcement but the day might come where it is an ex-military/leo that starts shooting who can be better trained with his firearm than you. And in that split second that you have to rack the slide back it could all be over.

In conclusion, I always have a round in the chamber. Trust in the gun, trust in your holster, and trust in yourself. And practice (shooting, drawing, putting back into your holster.)
This. So very much this. If you're not 100% confident in your equipment or yourself, DO NOT CARRY. It's that simple.

I know people that carry just to "prove" they have balls. They're some of the most arrogant people I know. Always flashing their gun whenever they want to prove a point.... It's only a matter of time before they end up arrested, or shot.

True, and often with their own weapon.

No, simply because I carry mine in my briefcase so I would hate for something to get caught around the trigger when trying to pull it out. But if I had mine holstered I would imagine I would have one in the chamber.

Two comments, yes, and hell yes.

In addition to requiring confidence, those who carry also need to self- evaluate themselves as being dumbasses or not, too. I knew a dude in high school... he was a dumbass, not a guy that I had any liking of. One day, a few years after high school, he was selling a .357 to somebody. He was apparently being a little careless with it, and his best friend admonished him to be careful with it. He replied, "I'm not a dumbass, it's not loaded," and to PROVE that it wasn't loaded, he placed the muzzle against his temple and pulled the trigger. That dumbass is no longer with us, having sprayed weak brain material all over his best friend, but that's how Darwinism works: Those dumb enough to not treat EVERY firearm as though it has one in the pipe, ready to go, will be weeded out of the gene pool.

Second, those who display to show badassery are idiots. I've carried for over 20 years now, and have never shown it to anybody, a single time, ever, as any display of my ability to win. I take great comfort in many situations, knowing that it is there if and when I need it, but I have yet to display it at all. On the other hand, there's my brother: I had given him a 9MM as a gift, and within weeks, he was in jail for going through a drive- thru, and showing it off. No, he wasn't robbing the joint... he was, I kid you not, just showing it off, telling the girl, "Check out my awesome piece! Ain't it cool?" Yes, she called the cops, because it's just not normal to show a perfect stranger your piece when you are in the drive- thru. He was an idiot, and he knows it, now that he is older and wiser and has a firearms violation on his record.

Ask any police officer the same question! They will tell you they always have one in the chamber

Well this is coming out about how I usually see people respond. 4/5 people carry with one in the chamber. I wanted to stay neutral until some people responded, but my opinion on the subject has been expressed by many here. When in an emergency situation (which is the only time a concealed weapon should be out other than being put away at night) you don't have the time that movies portray to rack the slide of a semi auto. Obviously revolvers always have one "in the chamber" otherwise it is unloaded and therefore worthless. I feel more comfortable with an external safety, but I have carried in the past with something like a Glock that doesn't have an external safety other than the trigger safety.

The important thing here is that if you are going to carry or even own a weapon, you need to become educated in proper handling and shooting techniques. Once you become educated practice, practice, practice! Go shooting on a regular basis so if/when you might ever need to draw a gun you are able to operate the gun safely.

Conceal carry without being in battery defeats the purpose of having a concealed pistol. If you pull it...you better be damn sure you're going to use it. To have to rack one in loses precious time.

Point? You TRAIN always with one in battery. If you mix up training battery (sometimes in battery sometimes not) you've just killed yourself.

Side note for those who voted no...Nice to know ya. Better change your shooting and practice habits for real world possibility. 27 year LEO (not the suburbs...Detroit)

why are military and law enforcement not carrying with one in the chamber? Im Navy, and when I stand watch at the gate my weapon is always carried condition 1.

Ever noticed in some movies you will hear the sound of someone pulling the hammer back (not racking the slide) and then the gun turns out to be a Glock?

YES!!!!
Every SINGLE episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
At first it was irritating, then just hysterical.

Conceal and carry people

I found this online and thought it's pretty sweet. A lot of different options. Not really concealed but I am sure we can make it work somewhere in our cars
