I carry but never have a round in the chamber, my MP 9C does not have a safety only the clock style trigger. While in the Marines I saw to many people shot themselves accidently because they put their finger on the trigger during their draw with the Berretta which had a safety.

Depending on weapon, double action yes, single action no. To each his own but it's a steel on target exercise and not a quick draw contest, I can rachet the slide on the draw and it puts both hands on the weapon for security and getting into a firing position. I just like the added safety if somehow I am disarmed, I know my drill of putting my weapon into service the other guy not so much. And I don't have to look to see if my safety is off. Pew Pew Pew

This reminds me of when I was bowhunting in Alaska and my companion was carring a .375 H&H magnum rifle. We ran face to face with a extremely large Brown Bear and he went into panic mode trying to get a round in the chamber of his rifle. I told him to FREEZE and the bear decided to leave us alone and I am alive to tell the story.
I gave him a serious ass chewing for NOT having a round in the chamber, he said that he was afraid that it was dangerous to carry a round in the chamber. If that bear had charged us, my only defense was my knife and his empty rifle.
Short version is that in a panic situation, the last thing in world you want to do is have to load a round in the chamber when your life hangs in the balance. If you feel that your weapon is not safe with a round in the chamber, get a firearm that IS SAFE with a round in the chamber!
So YES, I always have a round in the chamber, and I ALWAYS carry at least one handgun at ALL times.

Always, .45 XDs.

If you get used to carrying without a round in the chamber, what happens when a scenario turns real. You might freeze and then remember you have to rack the slide back. In that split second you or someone else could have been shot.

The big thing that I see here is people underestimate others. Most shootings are from people who do not understand firearms as much as military/law enforcement but the day might come where it is an ex-military/leo that starts shooting who can be better trained with his firearm than you. And in that split second that you have to rack the slide back it could all be over.

In conclusion, I always have a round in the chamber. Trust in the gun, trust in your holster, and trust in yourself. And practice (shooting, drawing, putting back into your holster.)

This is exactly why you keep your finger out of there when dealing with your firearm. Keep your finger high on the slide (ejector port) and I promise it will be fine. Hell it's just a good rule in general. Keep your finger out of the trigger guard until ready to use.

Swimming against the tide, but no. Don't want to risk an unintended person getting shot "accidently"......including myself.

One of the reasons I dislike Glock and weapons like that is the lack of a real safety.

"My finger is the safety"...isn't very comforting.

When I carried my 1911 the very, very positive and strong thumb safety was a comfort.

What would be the point in carrying and unloaded weapon? I always have one in the chamber.

Having been in a situation before where seconds mean the difference between life and death, you don't have seconds to remember to load the pistol. I'm glad I always carried one loaded with the safety off and I always will.

I've witnessed military and law enforcement personnel with years of training forget to load the pistol in SHTF scenario simulations, do you seriously think untrained civilians will remember to do this when the real thing happens?
