A Buddie's Son hooked up. A C5 Member actually was one of his Training Instructors in I think the T38 or Sim.

The M-Model? Could you elaborate on your experience with this jet?

In any case I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but for those who may not know, we are doing some amazing things with this airframe at the moment.

So while I'm already here, I might as well add another photo...FREDDY flying high above the Atlantic!

Oh man the list is long for my favorite aircraft, P-38, Fw190s,..the guy that soloed me was a P-51 fighter pilot during WW2..I fly a little Cessna, but its soo much fun to get off the ground, I don't think of anything except flying.

Yeah, tail swap after tail swap after tail swap. Nothing I hate more then loading a C-5 because you know it has a very good chance of breaking so you have to download all the cargo and upload it to another tail and if they kneel the damn thing then you know its going to break.

It's nice to hear an ATOC perspective, although it still sounds as if you're not familiar with the C-5M. From a crew perspective, it's an amazing aircraft to fly and is what the C-5A/B's should have always been. The Airlift records the 9th and 709th are continuing to shatter (and current M-Model reliability rates) speak for themselves.

Anywho, while I'm here please enjoy some recent photos of us picking up some fuel from an PA ANG KC-135

You're not wrong I have not worked with the C-5M much yet but the A/Bs have left me tainted. I hope that all of the upgrades have fixed all the reliability problems the A/Bs suffered from.

I have some friends who were deployed and they said if you absolutely need to be somewhere hope you're not scheduled to be on a C5. They said they break all the time. Although I'm sure the M models are better. I look at an entire row of them in the boneyard near my house. Kinda hard to miss lol

Yeah, the C-5 has been such a POS for so long that the stigma around its previous performance is hard to shake. The airframe still has its issues, but that's par for the course for an aircraft of this size moving the weights we are airlifting. Dover is the AF's first and only fully operational C-5M unit, and reached full operating capabilities less than 2 years ago. Travis AFB is soon to follow. In the old B-model days it wasn't uncommon for jets to be out for 3-4 weeks due to maintenence issues. Now we're performing the same missions in 3-4 days, and in many cases we're doing it ahead of schedule. The new improvements to this weapons system have done wonders for this jet, which they're planning on flying for another 40 years. Hopefully the new FREDDY will continue doing what it's doing for that long!

I will say that I have loaded a couple Mark V boats on the C-5 and damn if that's not impressive once you get it loaded.

Hell yeah it is! I've never had the pleasure to load one, but have seen the pictures our crews have brought back. Just a few inches to spare on each side...pretty crazy! One of the reasons Congress chose to move forward with the M program rather than buy more C-17's was due to out sized cargo like this. There are still quit a few things out there that need an airplane this size for airlift. Kind of jealous you've got to do the Mark V in person lol

It was nerve wrecking as hell each time but felt awesome once it was complete. Get some flights into Norfolk and I'm sure you will get your chance.
