Late C3 or C4 Corvette. You can get one for 10k and spend the other 10k on upgrades.

beat me to it!! if you a sc one then get a 05-07 those will be about 10,000-14,000 right now if you want a turbo which stock for stock is faster handles better and has badass rims and seats lol (take no offense to this sc guys i just say it cause my friend with a sc is always like "im gonna steal your rims" or " I'm takin your seats") but with just a tune on the ss/tc you could be in 290-300 whp and 350wtq on just a tune! and a ss/tc will be in the 15-25k range my uncle has a used 09 with lsd/highrise and in imp. blue for 18,900. But just something to think about

If you actually mean strictly a sports car, then your only real option for under $18K (unless you're ready to accept pretty poor condition) is an MX-5, Solstice, or Miata, or perhaps even a C4 or early C5 Corvette. If you mean general performance, well then see above.

Best car would be a 2003 350z. You can get for around 10,000 if you look hard enough. Then drop 6-8 into it and have a 450whp 3200lb car that hauls ass.
