1969 z/28 302 vs 2011 camaro ss l99

So I'm at a car show this week...a guy pulls in with a nice camaro z/28 with the 302 motor. He parks beside me gets out and walks off. I'm talking to a guy next to me when 3 guts come up and start comparing the 2 cars. This new car is all technology the one guy says.....but the z28 still beats it....the new camaro has good power but the z28 still beats it. They went on and on about how the 69 would beat my car in most categories. I like the old muscle cars but I think people just don't know hard hard these cars can run. What do you guys think.? I'm in noway putting the 1969 z/28 down....I just think my car is being underestimated.

wouldn't be close if he is stock. i'm sure the 69's 0-60 was over 7 seconds your car should be below 6

It's red and matches your car, what you should have done is bought it so you have a pair.

It's really very straight forward. Look at all the work Mark Stielow put into Red Devil to basically match a new ZL1. Now that little 302 is a screamer and maybe with some slicks and a few tweaks it would beat your car in the 1/4 mile. But that's it. It was a beast of a car in it's day, those days are gone.

Don't get me wrong, I love first Gens and own one but they just aren't the car we have today in any forum. I know this video is against a ZL1 but Red Devil is a lot more car than a stock Zapper.

That 69 is so hot. I wouldn't give up my 5th gen for one, but if I can afford it one day I'd like to have a 69 and do a modern engine, suspension and drive train.

The 1969 Z/28 was awesome for its time, but there is literally no category in which it will outperform your 5th gen. I actually have a 1969 Z/28 but sadly when I bought it it did not have the original 302 DZ engine. I also have a 2014 1LE and there is absolutely no comparison. In stock configuration with period correct tires the 69 Z/28 was a mid to high 14's car. With modern rubber it might break into the high 13's. (yes tire technology has advanced that far in 40 years) Your 5th gen will out corner, out stop, and out accelerate a stock 1969 Z/28 and all the while be safer, more comfortable and get better gas milage. And believe me I adore the 1969 Z/28 with all of its shortcomings (and there are many) but only someone completely ignorant of the actual performance of the 1969 Z/28 and modern 5th Gen Camaros would say something so completely wrong. A stock 5th Gen V6 would whup the 69 Z/28's ass in everything except possibly 1/4 mile if you allow modern rubber on the 1969.

I think the guys that were making these comments have just never driven any vehicle from that time period, because if they had they would have a different opinion. They were probably just parroting things they have heard others say in ignorance. Believe me, I have had two vehicles from that time, my 1969 Z/28 and a 1969 Impala SS. Both cars had loose steering, the brakes were awful, and the body roll in turns was shocking by today's standards, but they did the most amazing donuts you have ever seen. Now if that 1969 Z/28 had been modified then all bets are off since there are some amazing performance parts you can install on them to bring them up to modern standards, but it didn't sound like those guys were talking about modified vs stock and after all you can modify the 5th Gen as well with spectacular results. Its obvious that you have great respect for the 1st Gen's and they deserve it, but keep your chin up because your 5th gen will outperform them in almost every measurable way.

Yeah they didn't know what they were talking about. 5th gen Camaros are all around performers!

Nice pictures btw - And I knew your car was IOM I have the same problem sometimes, but I know one thing it's not red! Lol

The old cars beat the new cars for so long that I'd guess they are stuck in that mindset and don't know what the new cars can do. Too bad the show wasn't at a strip. It would have been a fun shoot out. Both gorgeous red cars. Line um up...

Stock, they are blowing smoke, given the full pro-touring treatment with a good driver is a completely different animal.

Keep in mind it not that hard to get a 1st gens weight down to 3000-3200 lbs, swap a modern engine in and a full suspension from art Morrison and that 5th gen is under powered and weights 1000lbs more.

http://www.artmorrison.com/camaro.php

And yes dollar for dollar the 5th gen wins, just don't think that modern tech can't transform a 1st gen

I know enough about the muscle car era .....I know our cars will out run most cars of the past. I've raced a 440 superbee to a 4 plus car victory. I just was more in awe about these guys putting down technology. I'm 45,these guys were in their mid 30s ,so it's not like it's some older guys doing the talking. I almost called them on it ...they didn't know I was the owner. Haha

I'm currently looking to add one of these. Can it beat the new Camaro? Who cares... just look at it. It wins on that alone.
