Two New GM Concepts: Bare Necessities Truck/Car

Link to article

Quote:
General Motors says that it's learned a lot since the Chevy Volt concept was introduced a few years back. Paramount among these new revelations is that not all green vehicles are created equally, and not all customers looking for an eco-friendly ride really want the same thing. Some may want a full-fledged automobile with all the trimmings that just happens to get great fuel mileage while some more hardcore greenies may be willing to give up the finer things in life in exchange for the ultimate in efficiency.

With that in mind, GM created a new Eco Initiative Project with the goal of understanding what eco-minded consumers really want. The first two designs – the Bare Necessities Truck and the Bare Necessities Car – look to strip the automobile down to just its essential bits, i.e. the bare necessities.

Probably not, it's not supposed to be a heavy-duty pickup. It's meant for those who like having the utility of a pickup truck but may not always need to haul or tow large loads.

And as it's just a concept for now, we don't know what engines will power the car, although I think the guy in the video mentioned something about 40 MPG.

I thought I heard him say a diesel hybrid type motor, but 40 mpg would be way cool. I remeber when they had this other concept that people really liked, what was it's name oh yeah it was a CAMARO.

I personally am looking toward an Avalanche, seem to be pretty cool.

Why don't they just allow diesels to be made/sold in the US?

All over Europe there are already cars getting 55+ MPG (think VW scirocco) using diesel? Because it doesn't make any money for lefty politicians they push "alternative fuels" that are not as efficient as what we already have but CHOOSE not to use.

told you guys this gm ain't the same...not until those assets go back into private hands...

the truck looks sort of nice...

the only solace i have is that all the other car companies are going to have to abide by the same new standards

The truck is interesting, but I don't see the point of the car given we'll already have the Spark.

I think the car might just be a design study. The truck on the other hand is definitely interesting and something GM should look into further.

That reminds me of the Top Gear Botswana special, when Jeremy and James have to strip their cars down to the frame to make it across the salt flats. Jeremy: "If I ever became dictator, I'd make it mandatory that all cars came without doors. Its just better this way."

In all seriousness, simple, stripped out cars do make some sense for people needing to commute around town, but I can't help but think public transport would do a better job of that anyway.
