G8 was announced in February 2007 at the Chicago auto show, that the G8 would be brought to the US in 2008.

From what I understand Pontiac had been on the chopping block for a while, even before the word "bankruptcy" was first uttered.

It kinda shows in the product too. While Chevrolet received a best-in-class (at the time) Malibu for 2008, G6 went virtually unchanged for years.
