Back in about 1981 I was out on a Saturday night drinking with my buddies. I got home about 2 pm, drove my 1979 Corvette in the garage and hit the remote to close the garage door. I got out of the Corvette and the door to go in the house was right there. Opened the door to step up into the kitchen and there was a super loud bang that sounded like a shot gun going off and I felt something brush the back of my pants leg. It scared the shit out of me. At the time I was living with my parents, it was so loud it woke both of them up. I tuned the light on in the garage to see the garage door spring laying on the floor. That spring hit the wall so hard it went threw the drywall and you could see a tiny dent in the siding from the outside. Scares me to this day thinking what it would have done to me if I would have been just one second slower. Oh, and it never touched the Corvette. Whew......

Had the same thing happen years back at our fire house. My Dad and I had gone down to service one of the trucks and the spring broke as the door was going up.
Bounced off the hood of our brush truck and went flying right where I had been standing just seconds before.
We had safety lines added to all the springs when the company came out and replaced the one.
