It looks like it may be because he's resting the bar far back on the shoulders and is compensating for it. Thoughts on that? |

thank you, i do see what you mean by the start the forward lean instead of being in a straight line, but when i look at this picture it looks like I'm mimicking the low bar squat pretty well

Is part of it for sure....but still loose through the core. He is folding down like an accordion if that makes sense.....and it's starting at his midsection then going down to his knees.

That picture is horrible and a sure fire recipe for bad knees as you get older....

If you notice with the low bar position the back and neck are straight to each other, in your video your neck is not in alignment, it's fairly straight but forward if that makes sense.

Watch this video....he squats "low bar" in competition. Look at the difference in the placement of the knees. Anytime your knee goes in front of your toes you are hyperextending all of the tendons and ligaments in your knees.

while i respect your opinion i would most kindly disagree. What causes knee problem is stopping before parallel and coming back up. That takes the posterior chain out of the picture and puts more stress on the knees. The knee in front of the toe thing has been considered a myth for years

But partial squats do not hurt your knees if ALL of the weight is on the posterior chain....and you can partial squat doing this IF you unlock your hips first and sit back.

The knee in front of the toes is not a myth but depends on overall form. If you try this you may notice it. No bar, just squat with a narrow stance your knees will extend further past your toes and I find it quite uncomfortable to the knee, with a slightly wider stance the knee will naturally extend forward less and is much more forgiving.

i would also say what causes knee pain is squatting with your knees caving in, really want them to turn out...i often notice this with new clients that their knees cave in when squatting, usually a sign of weak quads

Quads have no business being associated with a back squat...
