I broke up with my dealer
I've been working for about 8 months as a sales consultant at a dealer in town here. Car salesperson life is hard. So many deals that I have worked countless hours and e-mails only to make a $100 mini. Most every new car I sold was only worth $100.
At least I got my camaro out of it

Before that I worked 25 years in the printing business got so burnt out I had to have a change of work and where I lived. Ive now been selling on Amazon exclusively for almost 10 years and have never made more money than I do now.... So keep searching, you will eventually find your way...

Did you get paid hourly too? Or did you only make money on a sale? Give us a little insight into the biz.... Did you make more if you sold a Corvette or Cadillac etc...etc... I'm just curious, because I have a 2014 F-150, besides my Camaro, and it seems like the salesman tried a lot harder on my F-150.

Nope there was no hourly wage. You can make 20% of the gross profit off of every sale. The problem is most deals did not make more than $500 in front end profit. When something makes less than $500 they pay you a "mini" of a $100. I don't really know about ford trucks maybe they have a little more profit but pretty much every Camaro sale was a flat $100.
I did make a lot more on used cars but when people come to a Chevy dealer they mostly want a new Chevy.

There is a lot more money to be made as a used car salesman. I work in the service department as a service advisor and i can tell you those salesman work very long hours, but if you are good you can make good money.
The service department is a lot more reliable, you pretty much know about half way through the month what you are going to make for the month. Plus i dont go to work knowing im not going to make anything for that day. |

So many of us hate dealing with the sales person when buying a car and they get a lot of flack.....but that is one job I would never want and I think everyone would feel differently if they knew what those folks go through and earn. About a 2 months ago, I bought a 2012 Suburban from a chevy dealer and had to wait for about 3 hours to have the car prepped and finance paperwork (it was a Saturday and only one finance guy on - two other sales were ahead of me)...as I waited in the showroom I could hear the salesman talking and eagerly looking outside for any perspective buyers....and I really felt for those guys.

My son worked for a dealership some years ago. Long hours, on phones and email all day trying to get people to come in all for minimum wage pay checks. That's about what he made on commission. Not worth it.

May 1st I start a new job at RC Willey doing Appliance & Electronics. Most of the guys there make more money than the average Franchise Dealership salesperson. The best part is that it is all indoors. Out here in Vegas it gets up to 116 in the dead of summer and I'm glad too be avoiding that.

There are more ways to get than the norm of a minimum deal. You have to work to your pay plan if you want to make money. There's CSI, Chevy Bonus cash, dealer spiffs.

I wondering why Discover, A&E or History channels haven't come up with a reality show at a CAR DEALERSHIP! Imagine Pawn Stars-type chaos and humor at a real dealership. So many of us "do battle" at dealerships and are curious about the black art behind the scenes.
