Books and Passages
I stopped watching TV about 5 years ago, around when HBO's "Rome" series ended. Just could not find anything that was worth while to watch. I still watch movies (usually Comcast On-Demand) and of course sports! HUGE NFL fan and big NASCAR guy. Some hockey during playoffs.
I have always been a voracious reader. Since I stopped TV I read a book a week. Sometimes two, depending on length. So any other readers here? Favorite books? What are you reading now? A few passages, you can Google them I guess to find out where they are from. -"Hapscomb's Texaco sat on Number 93 just north of Arnette, a pissant four-street burg about 110 miles from Houston. Tonight the regulars were there, sitting by the cash register, drinking beer, talking idly, watching the bugs fly into the big lighted sign." -"They must have a print. Why fingerprint if they didn't have something to match it to? They were checking that van for prints. No time to see if they were checking cars too. Van. Carrying the wheelchair with Lounds in it-that tipped them. Or maybe somebody in Chicago saw the van. There were a lot of vans at Gateway, private vans, delivery vans. No, Graham just knew he had a van. Graham knew because he knew. Graham knew. Graham knew. The son of a bitch was a monster." -"How come you know my name? You aren't supposed to know my name, Buttercup." "I know lots of things Mathilda. I have gazed through space telescopes into the heart of the galaxy. I have seen a dawn of four hundred billion suns. It all means nothing without life. You and I are special, Mathilda. We are alive."

I read a lot more than watching TV here as well. A couple of favorite shows, but books usually win in the consuming of my time. My wife is a Librarian, and I run a chain of comic book stores as well, so It's kind of in my blood. Love sci fi, especially techie stuff and space opera.

Try out Poul Anderson's classic "Tau Zero" and maybe "Robopocalypse" by Daniel Wilson.

I don't usually read new stuff unless it's a biography. I'm re-reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories from the Strand magazine right now, as well as one of Dr. Robert Ballard's books on undersea exploration. Ballard has a mild touch of vanity in his books at times but they are fascinating reads.
I rather enjoyed O'Reilly's 'Killing Lincoln' and I have yet to crack open 'Killing Kennedy'. I have a few historical books I need to start too, one on Shackleton's lost expedition and another on Counterintelligence in WWII. I tend to re-read things I like. I'll start Huck Finn again this summer for about the 40th time I'd like to get the volumes of ' the Trail of the Stanley Cup' but man that's a pricey endeavor

You may enjoy the story of the SS Republic shipwreck, "Lost Gold of the Republic" by Priit J. Vesilind: http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Gold-Repu.../dp/1933034068 If you like espionage and stuff try out anything on the "Venona" project. A really great book on the amazing efforts to conceal the search for a sunken Russian sub, K-129, can be found with "Project Azorian" by Polmar and White: http://www.amazon.com/Project-Azoria...roject+azorian Yeah, I read WAY too much.
