Mercedes-Benz USA sold more Geländewagens in 2013 than in any year since 2002 and more GL-Class SUVs than at any time in the nameplate's eight-year history.

Toyota Land Cruiser sales rose to a five-year high in 2013, as did sales of the Lincoln Navigator. More Range Rovers found American driveways in 2013 than in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, or 2012.

All in all, 2013 wasn't a bad year to be selling very roomy, expensive sport-utility vehicles.

If you sell Cadillacs, 2014 will likely be a much better year than 2013, particularly in the first few months after the new Escalade arrives. Being the first to own the next Escalade is, for rich people, what it's like to be the first to own the next iPhone if you're a hipster.

With the amount of attention paid to the debut of Ford's 2015 Mustang and with the enthusiasm generated when Chevrolet introduces another hi-po Camaro, one could be forgiven for forgetting the Dodge Challenger exists.

But in the marketplace, as U.S. Camaro sales slid for a second straight year and as Mustang volume totalled less than half what Ford achieved in 2005 and 2006, sales of the Dodge Challenger increased. Again. For the fifth consecutive year.

Surely next year, you say, with a new Mustang in the offing, the Challenger's appeal will be extinguished, right? Well, didn't we expect to see the Challenger suffer when the Camaro went on sale in 2009 and became readily available in 2010? Didn't we think the refreshed 2010 and 2011 Mustangs would seriously hamper the Challenger's ability to attract buyers?

Last year, the Challenger's market share in its three-pronged pony car lineup was 20%. (Rather obviously, it accounts for 33% of the category's available nameplates.) In 2013, the Challenger's market share rose to 25%.

If the goal is to be the outright top seller, then Chrysler is failing. But if the goal is to make money - the Challenger shares engines with many vehicles in the Chrysler Group and shares a platform with the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger - then taking a bite out of the Camaro and Mustang, both of which are available in many more forms, speaks to the Challenger's success.

Great info. I see the challenger if finally getting noticed for its great looks with a 16% market share increase. I'm curious to see how things play out with the 2016 camaro coming out soon. The challenger could potentially over take the mustang with a updated interior and a weight loss. Thanks for sharing.

Once again, thanks for pointing it out! Yes that was a mix up, seems like they accidentally posted the Buick Encore's December 2013 sales instead of the Encore's year end sales.

The Buick Encore sold 31,046 units in 2013.

If y'all see any others like that please let me know and I'll correct it if I can.

I doubt it with the 15 coming out in the fall, Mustang sells will rise quite a bit until the new Camaro and Cuda (if it ever makes it to market) even it out again. I'm glad the Challenger is gaining so much ground on such an old platform. As far as looks goes it is by far the best IMO.
