Hahaa, the "shipping monkeys" comment made me laugh out loud. (For what it's worth, each light was wrapped in bubble wrap along with the newspapers and t-shirts.)

As expected, UPS denied my claim. Their explanation was that "the single wall box was not adequate to support the weight of the merchandise."

Oh well, I guess I will just chalk it up to a very expensive lesson learned.

So, just a warning to anyone shipping via UPS and buying the insurance they offer, have the people at the UPS store pack it for you so that they cannot weasel out of paying your claim.

lol, you think having the shipping monkeys at the UPS store will stop them weaseling out of a claim?

UPS stores are franchises, not owned or operated by UPS, I very well have had claims denied even though I had the UPS store pack the merchandise.

Wow, that is unbelievable. I guess buying the insurance at all is just about worthless then. The first question they asked me when I turned in the claim was if it was packed by the store or if I packed it. I knew I was in trouble right then.

You obviously have some experience dealing with the shipping side of things, are all the carriers like this or just UPS?

UPS is the only one I ever had to make a claim with.. Never had damaged packages with USPS, but their delivery times are slower and tracking though better now was nearly non-existent for the past several years.

I used to sell computer and car parts thru ebay, and some mopar forums I've shipped >$100,000K in merchandise since 2006.

USPS was (isn't any more) the cheapest, but take the longest, UPS was higher priced but stuff got there quicker.

I learned my lesson after the first claim, pack it right so you don't have to worry about it.
