At least that means people are warming up to the 2014 Camaro refresh. I remember when it was unveiled, it was like armageddon on the forum denouncing it!

After Recent Fire, Chevy SS Returns For Pacing Duties At Daytona 500
Quote:
Last weekend, during the NASCAR Sprint Unlimited exhibition race at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida, the event's 2014 Chevrolet SS pace car caught fire because of some faulty electrical equipment used to power its caution lights. It looks like the issue has since been fixed because the Chevy SS pace car is back, this time for pacing duties at this weekend’s Daytona 500.

The SS pace car is based on a stock 2014 Chevy SS but features a custom livery and a light bar on its roof. Powering all SS sedans, including this pace car, is a 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 rated at 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque.

The SS pace car joins a 2014 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab that will pace the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series NextEra Energy 250 later today, as well as a 2014 Camaro SS 1LE that will pace the NASCAR Nationwide Series Drive4COPD 300 on Saturday. Interestingly, it was at the Daytona 500 last year that the SS made its debut.

Austin Dillon of Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet will start on pole for the 56th running of the Daytona 500 this Sunday after his epic performance during last weekend’s qualifying. He is the second straight rookie to start the race on pole, following Danica Patrick who did the the same at last year’s race.

At the end of the day the SS still is one ugly boring looking car. If you need the performance numbers the SS provides the Charger SRT8 is my car of choice. If and when GM builds something equally as good looking or better i will buy it. Until then i will continue to buy other brands until they put the passion they did in the C7 and 5th Gen camaro and build a killer looking RWD performance sedan.

I honestly think a 2012'ish AMG C63 from Carmax w/ warranty would deliver more smiles per mile and cost the same then this LS3/6L80 combo. GM should of priced this similarly to the Camaro SS as it shares a lot of the same components.

I'm posting this here instead of starting a new thread like others probably will.
Several points but first, the "10 year old drive train" is what is in the car that drives this website. Do you make the same comment about the Camaro? Wouldn't buy it because it too has a 10 year old drive train?

Second, according to Kelley Blue Book a 2012 E65 AMG (the true competitor to the SS) will run you well over $70,000 with 20,000 miles. Yes a huge amount of awesome, but still a good new Malibu for winter driving above the SS. The C-class is a small car and competes with the ATS, not the CTS.

But continuing with CPO pricing and adding the options on the SS, a C63 will still run you $56,000. And if you want to continue comparing smaller cars a CPO M3 from 2012 will run you $64,000.

Yep you could go non CPO and save some bucks but if buying German I'd go CPO just for the warranty.

I hope you are correct and the LT1 with an 8 speed finds it's way here. But the LS3 is still in production for the Camaro for a couple of years and as it is very expensive to put a new powertrain in a car, I don't think we will see that until the Camaro moves away from the LS3 also. And I HOPE I'M WRONG!

I was comparing C63 prices ($35k-$53k) using Carmax which has "no haggle pricing" and offers a killer extended warranty.

Notice the miles on those low price cars. The one for $36,000 has 55,000 miles on the clock. OUCH! That's a lot for a 2 year old car.

The one for $44,000 has over 40,000 miles and that is right there with a brand new SS.

At that mileage you are right in the sweet spot of maintenance costs for a German car.

All the other C63s in your link are even more $$.

Not arguing your point. The Merc is a fine car. But it is a smaller car and I wouldn't compare very used cars with new but that's just my preference. I just don't like buying used cars.

"One ugly boring looking car"...says the guy driving a Dodge. I guess when you can't win any category you have to fall back on "personal taste". The SS is simply a better car top to bottom than the Fiat...errr...Chrysler twins and this is the second declarative review to say so.

Nothing wrong with the C63 AMG but it's a smaller car. At that mileage with no manufacturer warranty and maintenance/repair costs for MB being what they are, you really have to be prepared for the German ownership experience, i.e. ankle-grabbing.

I would take the black one with 17K miles for $46k and get their additional 6 year/ 100,000 mile warranty plus their standard 5 day money back guarantee if I don't like it for any reason. Of course I would test drive the SS and AMG C63 before plunking down that kind of money on a performance sedan, I'd also look around for more affordable ones with less miles as I only spent twenty seconds to come up with that list. I'm also not here to argue, just pointing out that not all 20k mile C63's cost $70,000.

Oh I just noticed you said E65's cost $70k according to KBB, I dont know if that was just a spelling mistake or what but there is no such thing as a 2012 E65. The AMG E class totally different model with a totally different hand built engine. The E63 has a twin turbo 5.5L V8 that makes 100 more hp then the NA 6.2L in the C63 and the 65 which is avaiable only in the S and G class uses a twin turbo V12. I also would not touch a used German performance sedan with a ten foot pole, but would consider one with an additional 6 year/100k warranty like carmax offers.

Carmax: AMG C63 17k miles $46,998
