Let's face it, the only realistically "clean" form of energy that would come anywhere near meeting our needs would be nuclear. Everything else is a minor contributor, or wishful thinking.

And if essentially all electricity was being generated by nuclear reactors, oil would be so dirt cheap that electric cars still wouldn't be economical.

His car doesn't burn oil. Like his plate says. And I'm sure it's a play on the term "buy oil".

???

I'm not getting the outrage here I guess.

I didn't put it in the OP but when I asked him about it he said that it's because his car didn't burn fossil fuels.

quoted from eHow...."Petroleum products account for approximately 22 percent of the materials used in the average tire. This equates to between 5 and 10 gallons of petroleum products, usually crude oil, natural gas or other hydrocarbons."

You are assuming that he recharges his car from the grid. I would not dismiss the possibility that his house has a bunch of solar panels on the roof or maybe even a small wind turbine out back. Is it likely? Probably not. But I suspect that owners of EV's are waaay more likely have an 'off the grid' power supply for their house (or at least for their garage) than the average person.

If you are burning oil in your wheel bearings, then something has gone seriously wrong.

The coal is worse. In fact, ambient radiation from burning coal is at least 3 times higher than nuclear power plants in the US.

Why so much hate for those who want to decrease dependency on oil? Yes, oil is part of the car in some form, but obviously some are trying to limit when possible. Plus, there is limits on greenhouse gasses which benefits everyone.

Why the HP people cannot respect others baffles me. No electric cars aren't perfect, but unless this person specifically came up to you and lectured you about your car then you shouldn't be saying a darn thing. You'd expect to be able to buy and drive what you want without criticism, so why not let this (and other electric drivers) do the same?

Ignorance you say? Indeed.

I don't mind electric cars until their drivers start thinking they're better than everyone else or that feel the need to tell everyone that their car is electric. It's like me putting stickers on my car saying that I get 12 mpg and don't have cats. If you want to drive around in a Tesla or a prius or a volt I honestly don't give 2 shits, it's when you brag about it that I'm going to say something.

I've found most TESLA owners to be more arrogant than any other car owner group.
