Chevy Volt costs MORE to insure then 2SS Camaro!

Having recently totaled my IOM Camaro 2SS I'm currently shopping various GM cars including the Volt. During a call to my auto insurance today I was surprised to find a lesser MSRP Volt costs $100 more to insure a year then a 426HP Camaro. SHOCKING??!!

Call another insurance agent.

Allstate for my coverage request (think I have 100/300/100 limits and $1000 Deductable on collision) is $261.94 for a Volt for six months and $286.94 for six months for a 2SS Convertible.

I guess I was doing well on my '10 Camaro 2SS @ $457 year for similar coverage with $500 deductible. '14 Volt with same coverage is $557/yr. Just seems odd a 149HP electric car could cost similar to insure as a 426HP performance machine.

You're also insuring a brand new vehicle versus one that is one or two(?) years old.

My brand new truck cost more to insure than my 10 year old car that I was trading in. Brand new vehicles will almost ALWAYS cost more to insure than whatever you're trading in.

When I bought my 2010 Camaro 1LT the insurance on it was less than my 2008 HHR with the same coverage and deductibles.

When I bought my 2LT convertible, I found it was cheaper to insure than a 2LT coupe.

Wow. A few hundred bucks per year instead of well over a thousand. I'm jealous.

Correct, on a new vehicle insurance you are getting purchase coverage, while on a used vehicle you get replacement cost (blue book) coverage.

Also, Insurance companies (usually correctly) assume that you will be driving your V8 SS less than you would a typical city car such as Volt, Hence the higher insurance.

The insurance is more because of the cost to replace parts in it. The lithium packs and battery subframe are expensive to replace.

The camaro is just a matter of generic parts put together

Plus, how many Camaros catch on fire as compared to the Volt percentage-wise?

Too many factors that don't relate from one car to another.

NHTSA remains unaware of any real-world crashes that have resulted in a battery-related fire involving the Chevy Volt or any other electric vehicle.

Now do a search on this forum for Camaro fires. There have been a few (The Stig comes to mind).

I own a Volt as well, but can't really compare insurance costs because I have fleet.
