Never known anyone to do a 1RM on the leg extension but ok....it still boils down to are you physically capable of doing it. All of the psychological, neurological, and nutritional factors are secondary. If you aren't these factors are irrelevant.
LOL. In this instance I wasn't referring to a 1RM. These other factors are secondary but they still do fall into play. You can be physically capable but if not mentally prepared you can still fall short. Evidence is your own statement that started all this when telling DZNTS to get his head into it. LOL

On a slightly different subject, since you brought up the 3 main lifts. I've been using two different programs for a while now and although I am still making gains I think they are starting to tapper off and have been considering starting a 5x5 program to bump up strength gains, I'm shooting for a 300lb 1RM on my squats which I think I'll hit soon. My biggest concern is it's difficult for me to use heavy weights on deadlifts due too two previous hernia operations. I've got two patches holding me together. Would substituting deads with leg presses be beneficial.

Normally I don't. Always do chest on Mondays, but decided to hit chest twice this week.

What makes it difficult to use heavy weights for deadlifts? Do you experience pain? What stance do you use when you deadlift? Sumo or conventional? I had one about 10 years ago but I don't have any ill effects.

I use a regular stance but just slightly wider than shoulder width. I can deadlift up to about 275 without much discomfort, at about 300 is where the pain starts. It's not pain as you would think, as I said I have two 6" patches used to repair the hernias, they were severe, to the point where they protruded like a grapefruit. When I lift heavy it feels like a sharp pinch and is quite painful. The reason for a slightly wider stance is also due to injuries, in the early 80's I was in a motorcycle accident, my left foot was pretty much detached., 12 broken bones in my foot and leg and a broken clavical.I currently have no hardware left in me but mobility in the ankle is restrictive. I can squat to parallel but no lower and have some pain but I tolerate it for the most part. I can do partial rep deads to knee height with no pain. Talking to my doctor is useless, he tells me to use less weight and more reps, like that's gonna happen. Believe me I'm no weakling, crap I don't see too many guys at the gym half my age that can squat 235 never mind for 12 reps. Don't forget I'll be 59 next month.

Just thought I'd pop in to add... 5 months since I was in the gym! I'm such a slacker. Letting a back injury heal properly this time... last time I pushed too hard and too quickly. After the new years I'll be back in. Luckily, I've kept up on my diet pretty well, and I'm only up about 7 pounds. I sure feel squishy though.

Wondered where you've been. Injuries suck. Don't feel bad, I've been making gains in strength, along with it comes eating like a horse and a few extra pounds but once you know what to do it's not a problem shedding them.( I hope) lol

CFD...first if a wider stance is more comfortable try switching to a sumo stance and see what the discomfort level is.

Also look into buying some just single ply squat briefs. Tight, but not so tight that it takes 2 people to get you in them. The extra compression and support they give may totally alleviate the pain.

The closest thing you could do to emulate a deadlift would be a Zercher squat off a slightly below parallel box.

Is the pain you are describing like a sharp burning pain?

The pain is exactly like being pinched real hard but internally. It's location is right where the hernia was. I don't now how a patch stays in place, If I remember correctly they said it is gortex I would think it is stitched or stapled in and think that is the pain, it's not muscular pain.
