downloading music for free! whats your opinion?
I know this has already been discussed on many threads and probably here too. Ill ask anyway. What's your opinion on downloading (pirateing) music from the net? Sure, there are some who believe that they make too much money anyway so you deserve free music. If that's the case, do you stop looking at movies? The stars in the movies make way more that any musian (I spelled that wrong huh?) So do you stop looking at movies? I just think that if this trend goes on we will all be listening to crap. And if music is important to, as it is to me, then you may put some thought in this. Your thoughts?!
If there's a thread for this already, sorry.

I think THE problem is that when you PIRATE stuff you get a bad name and this is always a subject that should stay at BAY. Just my thoughts ")

I draw a major distinction between singles and albums. If its a single that an artist has released for play on the radio, and is accompanied by a music video on TV and/or the web, I don't have an issue with downloading it. And in many cases, I can access that music on demand for free through the artists own website. I don't really see the difference between downloading such songs and recording them off the radio via a cassette tape (aside from the convenience factor)
However, entire albums are another story. The majority of songs on them (unless it happens to be a best of album) haven't been released in a public manner & can't be easily accessed via legitimate means for free. Think of it this way, if I call up a local radio station & request they play every song off of 5FDP's American Capitalist album, they'll probably hang up on me. But if I just ask for Under & Over It, they'll probably do it. I can get a single for free by simply asking. But I can't get the album. Also, I'd also say that I have probably bought more albums because of the singles that I've downloaded, rather than less. When I was young, there were quite a few albums that I bought because of one or two songs. But then the album sucked. Now, every now & then I browse through my music library & see who I've got a handful of songs from and what album they're off of. If I see I've got 3 or 4 singles from an album ... chances are, I'm going to enjoy the other 10 off the disc. And if I like that disc, I'll probably enjoy some of that artists other work too. And maybe even go to their show the next time they're in town.

What about the music downloading apps on android phones, is that considered pirating? Because you dont pay for anything that you download

I don't like spending that much money on music just to find out that the album sucks (minus one or two songs). Are 2 good songs and 8-10 bad songs worth $12? But if I download the album, have a listen, and it's good, then I have no problem going to the store and picking up the CD to support the band. Besides, artists generally make all their money off of merchandise, concert ticket sales and royalties anyway. And the last time I checked, the labels are all sitting on seriously healthy profits. If they're claiming that piracy is hurting people's wallets, then maybe it's their job to re-think their pay scale.

Think of it this way. Music is Intellectual Property (IP). GM has had cars ripped of in design and style in China. That IP is not protected there. Your argument would be similar to "well GM put it out there so now it's ok for any manufacturer to make their own Camaro". That would be stealing in the U.S.

Artists make nothing off of album sales nowadays. Pirate away. If you like it, buy a ticket.

Artists make nothing off album sales because of what piracy has done to the industry. How about I steal the product or services you produce/provide? The quality & variety of the music available today suffers greatly because of what digital music & piracy has done. The quality of the sound of what you get with digital music sucks! It has been so compacted that you lose so much of the separation & quality of sound it is just crap. That is why I hate to see the auto industry taking CD players out of cars. When I want to listen to good music, I want to be able to pop in a DC. Okay enough, This could go on endlesly.

How about this. I'm too old to be messing around with anything that petty that ends up being illegal. I keep saying I'm going to throw $500 on I tunes and just get what I want finally.
One issue though is that some tunes I want aren't always available through legitimate services. Sometimes they are obscure songs from the 80's and the only place to find them is other than legal. Haven't downloaded any of those yet, just saying.

Also, if you're not downloading CD quality music files, that's just ineptitude on your part. It's digital either way, just depends how it's ripped and compressed. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2

As for artists not providing music for free, the majority of band sites that I've been to have some form of audio and/or video player for you to access their music on their site, for free. No pop-up ads, no subscriptions, you don't have to send in a proof of purchase. Just go to their site & listen. Quote:
The ones that are abusing IP are the quasi-cover bands that take a popular song, tweak a chord or two and mess around with a hand full of notes, maybe adjust the temp a tad ... anything to 'change' the song without really changing it. Then they sell it to be used in advertising or sound tracks (often for TV) or even claim it as their own in a live show or on their album. One example that I saw on TV tonight was for a new Conair electric razor or trimmer, the background music sounded sorta like the baseline from Eminem's Lose Yourself (not sure where Em got it from, but thats not the point here). They took someone elses original art (music) and changed it just enough to be called different and then collect the cash. As I said in my previous post, I'd argue that music artists have made more money off me personally because I've been downloading music than if I hadn't. At worst its more or less a wash. Maybe I'm not typical, I don't know. I can only speak for myself.
