BMW Individual Builds The Most Expensive 7-Series Ever

In a world of mass production, even for high-end vehicles like the BMW 7-Series, it’s nice to see the discerning individual can still have some things fashioned the good old way, as in tradition-led handcraftsmanship. That’s a principle BMW is keen to live up to with its BMW Individual personalization service, which has built a special edition 7-Series inspired by German silversmiths ROBBE & BERKING.
ROBBE & BERKING is among the most tradition-steeped silver manufacturers of our day. Each of its products is a representation of the company’s belief in craftsmanship and goal to create pleasure not just for a lifetime but for generations, whether it be simple cutlery or fine jewelry. This principle has now been transferred to a car in the form of the 2014 BMW 7-Series Sterling.

On the outside, the kidney grille, trim, exhaust tips and badging have all been fashioned out of solid silver by the staff at ROBBE & BERKING. The car also gets a unique paint finish dubbed Singapore Gray. In case you were wondering, the famous BMW roundel is also fashioned out of silver and its blue and white sections done with hand-applied enamel. If you’re thinking of a similar mod for your car, just note that a simple spoon from ROBBE & BERKING will set you back more than $300. No surprise then that the 7-Series Sterling, which contains around 22 pounds of silver, is the most expensive 7-Series ever built.

Open up the doors and you’re granted with silver side plates bearing the ROBBE & BERKING name.
More silver is used for the door trim, which features a traditional rippled finish. Not everything is silver, mind you. Designers have also added materials such as Amaro Brown Merino leather and Alcantara.

BMW Individual has now been running for 20 years, and the department will be more than happy to help you personalize your own car should your bank balance agree. Previous creations include last year's 7-Series V-12 25 Years Anniversary Edition and 2010's 7-Series Composition.

When it came to the question of how this precious metal could be combined with an automobile, the BMW designers and the silversmiths from ROBBE & BERKING sought inspiration in each other’s work. “Just as the silversmiths got inside the car and absorbed its ambience, we went through their workshops and took in the whole atmosphere and the special techniques for creating silverware in order to translate them into the vehicle,” adds Martina Starke, head of BMW Color and Trim Design, recalling the beginning of this collaboration.

The elegant silver lends both the interior and the exterior of the BMW Individual 760Li Sterling an unparalleled lustre and makes it the most valuable one-off that has emerged from the BMW Individual Manufaktur to date. And yet at first glance it is far from the most conspicuous car – deliberately so. On the contrary, in keeping with the concept of discreet luxury and exclusivity espoused by both partners, the BMW Individual 760Li Sterling only reveals its merits upon closer inspection.

Oliver Berking explains the difference between silver and other shiny metals as follows: “It has a uniquely warm glow that instantly tells the connoisseur it is silver and not chrome or polished aluminium.”

On the BMW Individual 760Li Sterling, the hallmark BMW exterior characteristics are finished in silver. The BMW kidney grille, the side trim element signalling the powerful V12 engine and, at the rear, the trim strip, model designation and tailpipe embellisher are finished in characteristic ROBBE & BERKING solid silver plating. The BMW logos on the bonnet and boot lid even boast solid 925 sterling silver. As a special highlight, the ROBBE & BERKING specialists have also artistically applied blue and white enamel to the BMW emblem.

Discreet ROBBE & BERKING lettering on the C-pillar as well as “ROBBE & BERKING Sterling” – along with “BMW Individual” –on the silver-plated trim strip at the rear bear further witness to this joint undertaking. The deep, warm Singapore Grey exterior paintwork, which is at once restrained and arresting, provides an attractive contrast to the silver highlights.
Hammering – the highest form of the silversmith’s art.

A first intimation of the interior experience is given by the elaborately worked door handles. Sterling silver hammered inlays embellish all four handles. As you open the door, the first things you notice are the silver-plated door sill finishers with ROBBE & BERKING lettering. Then the interior opens up to reveal an extraordinary sight: all the trim strips are made of solid 925 hammered sterling silver.

Also known as martelé, hammering is one of the oldest and most sophisticated techniques of the silversmith’s art. The depressions created by the hammer break up the light in numerous directions, lending the metal surface organic movement as well as embellishment. To achieve this, a highly polished sheet of silver is processed using a special hammer. No two hammer blows should fall on the same spot and yet the entire surface must be covered with equal force. And therein lies the crucial challenge: one misplaced blow and the piece is no longer usable. Only the experienced hands of the silversmiths are able to create the gently undulating facets that lend the interior of the BMW Individual 760Li Sterling its special lustre.

All hammered surfaces are solid 925 sterling silver, as identified by the ROBBE & BERKING maker’s mark and the crescent moon and crown mark that are found exclusively on pure silver products. The trim surfaces of the BMW Individual 760Li Sterling accordingly bear the punch mark with the crescent moon, which is the international symbol for silver; the crown, the symbol for Germany, and finally the maker’s mark. The head restraints take up the crescent and crown of the punch mark in embroidered form, handcrafted in the BMW Individual saddlery.

BMW Individual fine-grain Merino full-leather trim in Amaro Brown is the most exclusive leather option available for a BMW. On the seats it is accompanied by contrasting piping in Opal White. The additional leather lining on the seat trim, the A- and B-pillars, the sun visors and the door sill underline the premium character of the cabin. The interior experience is capped by an Alcantara roof liner likewise in Amaro Brown. The BMW Individual 760Li Sterling thus offers the choicest combination of materials to be expected in a luxury-class vehicle. A small tribute to the almost 140-year silverware tradition of ROBBE & BERKING completes the interior fittings: above the rear centre tunnel are two silver goblets and a silver carafe that were custom-made exclusively for this special model.

True. But when I see stuff like this it shows what Cadillac will have to do to play in the field with the 7-Series, S-Class, etc with its upcoming flagship sedan. I'm not a big 7-Series fan, but I do admire the detail of the BMW Individual cars and the craftsmanship of this Robbe & Berking edition.

I hope Caddy has something big planned for the LTS (or whatever it will be called)!

The BMW Individual 760Li Sterling Inspired by Robbe & Berking Has a Silver Lining

Sterling Archer enjoys the finer things in life—he is, after all, the proud owner of a closet full of $900 black turtlenecks. Yet the BMW 760Li Sterling is not named for America’s favorite animated spy. In fact, the Bimmer’s full name, technically, is Individual 760Li Sterling Inspired by Robbe & Berking. (That would be sterling as in silver, and it comes courtesy of Robbe & Berking silversmiths of Flensburg, Germany.) BMW’s Individual department, the crew who will trim your interior with narwhal tusks (we’re joking, we hope) if you carry a fat-enough wallet, enlisted Robbe & Berking to fit the 760Li’s kidney grilles, badging, sill plates, and exhaust outlets with solid silver. It stands out quite nicely against the Singapore Grey paint.

But the inside is where the truly cool stuff hides, and before we get into the details, we need a bit of perspective. You see, one of Robbe & Berking’s soup spoons will set you back $320. (Relax, it’s dishwasher safe.) But that $320 soup spoon is made of 925 sterling silver, which means it is 92.5 percent pure silver, 7.5 percent some other metal, likely copper, to make it stronger and less prone to tarnishing.

Badging on this particular 760Li also happens to be made of 925 sterling—and the roundels feature hand-applied blue and white enamel—and it’s used to adorn the interior of big BMW sedan, too. There it is hand hammered, the time-honored technique that gives the polished surface an even, rippled appearance. These panels stretch across the dash and feature prominently on the doors in areas where you would normally expect to find fine burled wood. Oh, and the same hammered silver is used for the exterior door handles, too. Rear passengers are treated to a pair of silver goblets and a silver carafe—bubbly not included. Nearly every soft surface inside is swathed in Amaro Brown Merino leather save for the Alcantara headliner. Silver surfaces are stamped with crescent moon (an international mark to note the precious metal) and crown (to symbolize Germany) emblems, which also are embroidered into the headrests.

As far as how to get your hands on this silver-themed, V-12–powered 7-series, we wouldn’t recommend rushing out to buy a lottery ticket. BMW hasn’t revealed pricing, although we’re sure Sterling Archer–level wealth is the bare minimum, but more important, the Individual 760Li Sterling Inspired by Robbe & Berking won’t be available stateside.
