Police Contact
I had my first contact with a police officer over the weekend. I was driving slowly through a mountain town and saw a police car coming toward me. I stopped at the next light and the police car turned around and pulled up next to me. She motioned for me to roll down my window. When I did she said "I want one of those! Are they expensive?"

Reminds me of the Detroit cops and State Troopers back in the day ( mid 60's to early 70's ) both running the Mopars with 440 wedges and those big old push bars in front and weren't afraid to use them ....

No, and i'm not going to list what town I was in, or what highway I was on. I will say the impala I had was egged on, and raced by a NYS trooper on a major highway YEARS ago, and afterwards he motioned to pull over so he could check out the car, saying he missed the caprice units they had, and preferrred them over the crown vic's. (the impala walked the crown vic) I only mention that one as the officer i'm sure has retired by this time, and is not at any risk of being in any trouble. You shouldn't assume things like people live in a hick town because a LEO eggs on a civilian car to race or play at all. You'd be VERY surprised to see how many officers are actual car guys too, and that doesn't matter what town they may be in, and in my life time, i've raced 2 state troopers, 1 deputy, 1 local officer (once in his own car, and once in a patrol car), and was not only asked to, but made fun of UNTIL I did two burnouts going through two reg/inspection sticker check points, one was in syracuse, and that's far from a hick town!. That conversation was hysterical. Officer told me that my car sounded nice and looked nice. (very radical cam). While talking to him, he noticed the exhaust smell (race gas). He made comment of my car not having a front plate (required by NYS V + T law), then made comment that it sure does sound nice, but does it have any yank to her? I said yup.. he then made comment that it sure would be impressive to see if I could get rubber out of it in 3 gears, I told him it could smoke em through 3, and chirp em in 4th, he said prove it. I laughed and told him yeah right, so I can go to jail? and he said no, you have our word, we'll let you go.. so I did. The look on the faces of people pulled over getting citations for expired inspections, expired reg's as I was launching was something I will never forget! |

Did you miss my first post when I said I had just played with an officer this past wed. after he waved me on? The Impala SS was a 96, and I had it in 99.. so that was 10 years ago this fall.

There is a 75 Dodge Monaco black and white close by in Detroit. So tempted to get her after seeing the for sale sign read $500. Couple of answers to some of the questions. Been a "cop" coming up to 21 years now. 4 years as an SP in AF 7 years in Florida and the remainder here in Detroit. Do you need a CJ degree? No. Helps weed out candidates and having a degree usually results in a better paying job and better benefits. I have one, but chose to work in Detroit. Can I be a dick? sure. I have my bad days like everyone else. I will say personally, I am no better than the average Joe. I work in Detroit...city cop. Treat me well, so will you be treated.

I stayed away from this thread untill today, because I had a feeling where it would be headed. For all those that gave support or said thank you, it is very much appreciated. Those words are so rare, that after all the years I have been a cop, I still don't know how to handle them.
For those that dislike us, no biggie, you will not offend me or hurt my feelings. However, just understand that untill you have seen what we have seen, dealt with the things that we have dealt with you will never understand us. Just like every other profession there is good and bad. The bad will always stand out over the good just the way it goes. I could write a book trying to explain what I do, why I do what I do, the things that I have seen, and the nights that I get to go home being lucky to get to hold my kids again. For those that hate us or just don't get us, know one thing, my goal when I start my shift is to go back home to my family. I will not ask you for your respect or to have sympathy for what I do, I chose my profession and the good and bad that comes with it. I have asphalt in my blood and will untill I die. I try to treat everyone the way I want a family member to be treated. Now to the degree, no offense to anyone else, but I say get your degree in anything else but CJ. You will learn what you need to know in the academy, but you will want something to fall back on, if you realize you don't like being a cop, or you get hurt to the point that you can't be a cop. Automatic Tickets: No Drivers License, No Insurance, Unrestrained Children, and driving without regard for the saftey of other people on the road. I'm not perfect and I don't expect everyone else to be either. |

Heheh my parents came to visit (they brought me my boys who stayed with them for part of the summer) and my dad did a ride-along the other day with me (Sunday Night) and he enjoyed himself. He said "Man, I could not do your job. The patience and tolerance you guys have to do this job and deal with these kinds of people day in and day out is amazing. I'd end up getting myself in trouble by telling them off or knocking someone on their ass." hahahahah Everyone SHOULD do a ride along. I think it's an eye opener for everyone and lets them realize what we go through. Same with military. In Germany, when you turn 18, you have to do a year (a year or 18months) in the German military. It's mandatory. I think we could use that here to straighten out some of these kids running around out here on the streets.

Wow.
We certainly got off topic didn't we. I'm not an officer, but have several fiends who are. Thank you to all our officers who do a thankless job for a bunch of mostly thankless people. Some of us actually apreciate what you do for us. I actually got pulled over quite a few times when I was younger, when I first started working at my current job I was working nights and I got pulled over quite a lot... I imagine the police assume anyone out at 3am must be up to no good , they always had some good "excuse" for pulling me over, and as annoying as it was I was always respectful, and I never got any sort of ticket, although my car was in horrible shape and I'm sure the officers could have easily have found some reason to give me one. Think of police officers as any other customer service, you get what you give. I drive for a certain big brown delivery service, and I have customers who treat me nice and customers who are rude, guess who gets really good service and who gets the bare minimum? It's going to be the same way with a police officer. Talking to one of my friends who works traffic ( his last job before retirement, and gets to ride a Harley all day ) I get the feeling that he is just doing his job, which in this case is writing tickets, but when people start getting mouthy he can and will easily find more things to write up. In otherwords, if you are going to be an ahole he will start walking around your car and find that you don't have a front plate, and the he will write you up for that, usually he won't, just depends on your attitude. Be repsectfull, no one said you have to kiss up, just remember the golden rule.

Would never expect a break because of who I am or what I drive.
Would like a break because, Im 37 not 18 and have perfect driving record. I dont mind cops, I know a lot of them. Some of them have attitude though, and the hypocrites these are the eye sores of the job. The other day I'm cruising along on my bike, 50 in a 35 and cop whips it around unsafe U turn, floors it probably 70 mph to catch up. I can stop in 30 feet, how long does it take him? Hypocrite, and who was the bigger danger to the public? It's a money thing and thats what I hate about it. |
