I think the goal is try to entice younger buyers to the brand, with the hopes that they'll trade up to a C-class, then an E-Class or CLS, etc., making them lifetime customers. Considering their depreciation is awful (a 2012 E63 goes for $65K, when it sold new last year for $100K), I guess you want people trading in and trading up. I'm not saying it'll work, but I think that's their rationale.
