Make your own password protected network and sign them both in.

Apparently he is not allowed to connect a router or switch in his room. I'm thinking if there can be no switch and router you take the main connection plug it into your laptop NIC card and then take the USB adapter and plug it into your PS3. Once that is done if windows registers the USB adapter as a network device in the settings you can bridge the connection from the NIC card to the USB adapter.

Yes this is what I have right now. I used the usb adapter just to add another ethernet port to my laptop. Yes Windows is picking it up as a lan and I have lan1 sharing to lan2 (the ps3) but for some reason, it isn't working. Lan2 isn't identifying the network so I think that's why it fails

Okay bare with me as it has been a while since I have done this but you not only need to share the connection but actually create a bridge between the two connections. You should be able to select both the NIC and the USB adapter and select create a bridge after you change the sharing settings.

I know that when I would use something similar on my old 360 I needed to have the bridge established in order for the connection to pass through. But that was on Vista and I have not really used 7 so I am not sure if they have changed anything. I am using either 8 or 8.1 for most of my windows needs.

Are you using a USB 3.0 adapter or just a 2? Reason I ask is that probably will affect your speed.

Well... it didn't work. Apparently you can't bridge connections if one of the connections is sharing already. Either way, I think I may have figured out the problem. Apparently, the university blocks all ports to be used for online game play and you have to call and request to have it open. Didn't know that at all (and still don't understand why they do that) but hopefully that solves it.. *fingers crossed*

The network here isn't the best (that's an understatement) but I feel it'd just be easier to just monitor in instead of doing this like this. For the wireless, you really just input your credentials and do what you want honestly.

If you are connecting your PS3 to your laptop using a wired connection you will need a crossover Ethernet cable to connect the PS3 to the laptop, otherwise it cannot communicate with the laptop and then go out to the Internet. See diagram below:

Internet -------- Laptop ======= PS3

------ standard Ethernet cable
===== crossover Ethernet cable

Oh okay. I pull a good 25mb down on my laptop wireless while on campus so that's not bad

Are you sure? Everyone I've asked has said that the crossover was only for ps2 and xbox and that xbox 360 and ps3 were straight through
