Angry Big Brother is Watching - Speed Cameras

Out of the blue, I get a nice citation from the City of Toledo's Photo Enforcement Program. After a little research, I am slightly relieved to see that it is considered a Civil Offense and not a Moving Violation. No Points removed / No Insurance Rate increase. Still ticks me off though.

Here in CA it will take a photo of the car and ask something along the lines of "Is this you driving?" or "Can you confirm you are the driver of this vehicle in this photo". My ex got one in the mail once. She had her visor down, and you could hardly make anything out resembling a human behind the wheel. So she said she couldn't tell if it was her. No more ticket!

Ha! That's California for ya. In GA (so I hear from friends), they have quite a few cameras at intersections watching for folks running red lights. They photo your car from behind (to get your license plate) and send a ticket to whomever the car is registered to. They don't ask you who was driving. Your car, your ticket.

Two of my friends have experienced this.

Yeah, but at the same time, I accidentally went in an Express lane in San Diego, CA once, and I didn't have one of those pass things in my window, so they took a pic of my car, and from the rear plate, they mailed me the ticket. So I paid it ($27) since it didn't ask if I was driving..
So I guess it depends on the type of camera system that they use, or maybe laws have changed. Because my story of that ex was about 3 years ago..

In California it is literally highway robbery. My mother was driving a car which is registered in my name and apparently went through a red light. I get a $550+ ticket in the mail.
And if you do not want it to show in your insurance you have the privilege of paying an extra $70 more to a driving school so they don’t send the info to your insurance. I think that it is outrageous and is just one more way of extracting money from the public like we don’t already pay enough in taxes. And on the top of that the excuse is that supposedly this is to make the streets safer but it has been proven that it actually makes it even more unsafe due to people slamming on their brakes. I hate politicians.

We have a have a couple on one street I occasionally have to drive down. I usually drive responsibly, but whenever I drive down that street I do 50 in the 35 than slow down to 20 as I pass the cameras. We have another one on a street I used to frequent several businesses on. Since that's optional I just don't frequent any business on that street or any other street I'm aware of having traffic cams. Vote with your wallet. If they want my business they'll raise a fuss till the city removes them. Either way I'll save money.

The tickets here are something like $25 if you pay by a certain date, after that date it goes up significantly and you only have a short window to contest. The ticket usually come in the mail around the due date so you don't have time to contest. Not to mention court cost to contest are more than the ticket itself.

I've never got one, but my wife has had two. The only time I drive by one(above) is when I have to pick her up from work for some reason.

In AZ you should only pay them if they get personally served on you, otherwise you say it never came in the mail. We used to have cameras on the freeways here, but they got removed when Janet Napolitano left to be head of Homeland Security (she was gov.) and was replaced by the whacky Jan Brewer. Gotta like that decision, though.

Good point, I mean... Mail gets lost or routed to someone else's box all the time. Who is to say I actually got it? It's not registered...

Ohio is under a big debate about it all now. Hoping they find it unconstitutional and refund my money. Yea, I will be paying, though I don't want to....

You could paint your tags with anti-reflective coatings and wear a mask when you know traffic cameras are around. I assume many Camaro owners have flip down tags. A lot of Ca scofflaws just run dealer tags even after receiving plates from DMV.

I'm a Police Officer starting my 27th year on the job. I don't like the camera's. They have little to do with curbing traffic crashes. They generate revenue for the company that installs and manages them and for the city or county they are placed.

If I see the infraction it's game on and I can use my discretion. Camera's take discretion out of the equation.

They also have camera's that monitor HOV lanes, and even some that monitor noise level. Loud exhaust, picture and ticket.
