get anything thats not apple. Swappa.com is a good place to find used phones if youre trying to keep a data plan (XDA recomends it as their place to buy/sell).

If you get an iPhone, just remember you'll have to spend a LOT more money. New phones mean a whole new set of cables. They have a non-standard charging cord that won't work with any other phones, and regularly change them so you have to spend more money constantly to keep up.

On the other hand, Androids and Windows phones all use a standard data and charging socket.

I wouldn't say you have to regularly change them - they provide you with one when you buy the phone and it will continue to work for years (I've never had an apple cable break or fray on me which I can't say for any other phone charger) and I wouldn't say they change it regularly - they kept the original design for 5 years. And since when is $20 for an extra cable a 'LOT' of money? This was the most overblown 'crisis' when they released the iPhone5. Was it annoying? Yea. But really not that bad

I was going to get the new Iphone, (just because of work) but now that I see that Apple is totally useless without Steve Jobs I'm going to most likely start searching for something different. I'm due for a new phone in a month. I guess I better start searching. GS4 most likely.

If I get a new one I'm getting the next gen unlocked Google Nexus (from Samsung). Straight from them so the phone is 100% unlocked for all functionality, first to get Android updates (supposed to have Kit Kat from what I've read), and cheap(er) month-to-month rates w/o a contract from different carriers.

The only caveat to the Nexus 3 & 4 (might be in 5, not sure) is that it doesn't support LTE. However I've had no issues watching a movie, downloading a good sized attachment, or any other media I've wanted without LTE.

My other option was a Note II, but I can't justify the extra $250-300.

It really is.

I'll admit Apples have decent build quality (usually) but after owning one (and paying for it), I can't justify spending that kind of money on performance that is at best, mediocre.

The Nexus 4 w/o LTE was a bummer. I got my current Note 2 for $400 from swappa, already rooted/romed.

That's how I am too, I have so many apple products, that I don't think I'll ever get another brand phone, at least not in the near future. I love how my computers, ipad, apple tv, and phone are all connected.
