We have a sonic, I know it's not the same, but maybe has the same feature...you can open the trunk by pressing up, underneath the trunk lid, above the license plate?

Same way on the cruze but if the key is in the ignition and the car is on you can't open the trunk from the outside even if the doors are unlocked. So you are forced to turn the car off, take the keys out of the ignition, press and hold the button, and then start the car again. It's pretty annoying when you are dropping someone off and they are trying to get stuff from the trunk.
