or from the bedroom.

I mean, I can't put two modems without paying for two internet lines. and if I move the modem to the living room, then i'll have lines running across the living room, and back to the bedroom.

Well there are a few options. You can do a range extender, a network Bridge, and there is a device that can pass a internet signal through electrical wires (Not sure how good this is since i have never used one) but for all of those I would not recommend them for streaming and gaming. Way to much packet loss gets involved and lower speeds. The best way would be to get that Coax cable you have in the living running but like you said that means you have to pay for another line.

With my wireless connection I can get to my living room where we have a Blu ray player but the quality of the picture when streaming is horrible because of the signal and packet loss.

Maybe you can have cable company relocate the current line somewhere in the middle of the house and run 2 Cat 5 cables to two different wireless routers. Right now I'm just thinking out loud though

Here's a quote from an article i found that talks about the device that extends a network through electrical wires

Quote:
To use your cable outlets, look into products certified by MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance); or, for electrical outlets, consider Powerline products certified by HomePlug. Both types of technology work in a similar fashion: You plug an adapter into an electrical/cable outlet and connect it to the router, bridging your network to the electrical/cable lines (or you can buy a router with a built-in adapter). If that works for your network, you can plug additional adapters into different electrical/cable outlets throughout the home or office and connect them via an ethernet cable to a computer or a wireless AP. If that's not feasible, you can also buy an adapter with a built-in wireless AP and use it to extend your network.
If you want to try this method, we recommend MoCA adapters from D-Link and Actiontec or HomePlug routers and adapters from TRENDnet, D-Link, Linksys or ZyXEL.

ok, so the whole wireless thing is out of the picture, because I will be streaming from both the living room and bedroom.

as for the bold, I can pretty much do this now. move the router from the bedroom, to the living room, and run cat5 back to the computer in the bedroom and to the xbox in the living room. just trying to hide the cables will be the hard part.

Currently what is your bandwidth and how old is your modem and router? And do you lease the modem from your ISP? And is your modem a modem/router combo?

not sure on the bandwidth. i'll have to check when I get home.

modem and router was bought from someone, so I own those now. not sure how old. i'll have to check that too. modem and router are separate.

In reality all the device does is send the packets through your copper electrical wires and the device on the other end will interpret the signal. Like I said earlier I'm not sure how good it will work since copper was never designed for a data connection but its not a expensive option you can buy the device for under 100 dollars most of the time.

Depending on age you might want to look in getting a new wireless router. The newer N an A/C have special antennas that might be able to reach your living room.

I don't think they are older than 5 years. not sure how I can find out, without asking the previous owner.

Look up the model numbers. Usually they have a sticker on the bottom with all their info. Some tech devices even puts build dates on them.
