Is there a "Tuning for Dummies" thread here?

What exactly is a "tune" and how do I get one? Sorry I'm so ignorant.

It is a modification of the factory settings on the computer module which controls nearly EVERYTHING on your engine and transmission. A reputable speed shop should be the best place to get a tune accomplished. There is also the option of getting a "mail-order" tune and downloading it yourself using a hand-held programmer. This is a pretty good option if you don't have a "reputable" LS speed shop close by. I would recommend Jannetty Racing 150% for that type of tune. Be advised.....modifying the factory computer settings (a.k.a. getting a tune) will void your factory powertrain warranty!!!

Basically, a tune tells your computer what to do. It does so by changing the parameters at which your computers allow. For instance, it can allow a different fuel-to-air ratio in the engine by changing the tables in your computer.

I also recommend finding a well-respected local shop specializing in LS-series engines to do a dyno tune for your vehicle. The next best thing is a mail order tune. The last best option is a hand-held programmer, but I find that these are better for small changes, like adjusting your wheel size, clearing check engine lights (CELs), and the like. I would not encourage using a hand-held programmer for long-term performance tuning.

Matt@FSP is also a badazz tuner. If you buy his handheld tuner he will send you a tune according to your mods for free. Especially if your an L99, his Trans tunes are awesome.
He is a sponsor on this forum.

+1

There are a multitude of shops that are very good at mail order tunes.

Since this is the thread for dummies....what are averave HP gains from a tune like the Jannetty? I know it will all depend on mods but for minor mods like CAI and cat back is the number closer to 10 or 75hp?

10 to 20 maybe a little more if you let your tuner tune for 93 octane only. Tune will get rid of your skip shift too. Cat backs add no HP. I'm referring to professional running.

You're in Utah, go to Premier Performance in West Jordan! They'll get you hooked up good!
