Cummins to be offered in another full size pickup

Didn't see another thread about this, so I thought I'd share for the few on here that might care.

COLUMBUS — Cummins Inc. has finally found an automotive partner willing to buy its light-duty diesel engine, sealing a deal that should create several hundred jobs at Cummins’ oldest and largest manufacturing plant, where the engine will be built.Seven years after Cummins shelved its light-duty engine project, Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. will put the V8 turbo diesel under the hood of its newly designed Titan pickup.....

.....
Nissan said it hopes the new light-duty diesel engine will give Titan a “key advantage” in the pickup market.
Nissan announced separately that a 300-plus horsepower, 5-liter diesel engine made by Cummins will be available as an option on the next generation Titan. Nissan wouldn’t say when the reworked full-size pickup truck will arrive in showrooms, but said the diesel versions are being tested on public roads.....

I was just going to post this...if they do though, the big 3 will probably follow once their testicles finally descend.

This is no rumor according to a recent MT article.

Expect a V8 diesel and "about" 550ft lbs of Torque.

This is about putting a diesel in a 1/4 ton pickup.

Whoops, meant 1/2 ton, I don't think they've made a 1/4 truck since ww2 lol - the Ram's diesel is tiny this new one has 2 liters on the displacement of the one offered in the ram, and gm d/c'd the 4.5 duramax before it even got started.

It is still a diesel in a half-ton and it makes FAR more sense than the 5.0 Cummins. The 3.0 provides extra torque, MPG, and the price is not out of line. I can almost guarantee a Cummins Titan will be around 5 grand more than an Ecodiesel Ram, will get lower MPG, and not produce a huge towing advantage. IMHO in both the F-150 and GM twins you are FAR more likely to see something akin to the Ecodiesel than the oversized and overpriced Cummins. IMHO Nissan should find a niche for it, but that is about it. I can see them maybe putting it in something beefier than a regular 1500 version, maybe like a 1500 HD or HD lite, but can guarantee you would be looking at some good $$$$$.

I can understand the practicality and competitiveness of the smaller diesel, but I have always seen this through niche vehicle shaped glasses so to speak. I am very excited about the opportunity with this Titan and hope it is smartly priced to push the other manufacturers into a more for less situation even though that isn't in vogue right now.

So sales will increase to 2500 units a month. Yay Titan.

I still do not understand the arguement of the bigger diesel being better. Even with five liters the half tons can only tow so much. My concern would be if Nissan is coming with a frame to handle the 5.0 liters or are they turning it down to just use it as marketing. Toyota had diesels in the past in their trucks and the big three did not bite, GM BTW offered diesels in the 70s (even dismal as the science project was) they jumped back out of the 1/2 diesel market.

With the cost of DEF exhaust systems, I don't see the cost savings in a diesel for a 1/2 ton. By the time you think you are going to break even, you have to replace the particulate filter.
