I just bought my wife a Limited Crosstrek about 4 months ago and we LOVE it! This is actually the second AWD CVT vehicle we've owned (Nissan Murano the other). I really like driving the experience of a CVT. They are smooth, linear and like the OP said an engine feels more powerful than it really is in front of a CVT. My wife is currently averaging 28 mpg in town with hers.

The CVT locks up like a manual, there is no torque converter slippage or power loss except when stopped.
Gear ratios are infinite depending on throttle and speed. Since it works like a manual, mpg tends to be better.
Subaru has paddles so you hold it in virtual "gear" without virtual "downshifting".

I'm pretty sure Foresters are built in japan. The Outback is built in Indiana.

Thanks for the technical explanation, but I currently have a 2012ish jeep compass with a CVT and it doesn't impress me. It feels sloppy off the line and not very impressive acceleration in comparison to my roommates rav4 with a 4 speed - I would have to try the Forester because I'm guessing it more so has to do with the jeep tuning?

Yes...the Outback is built literally 10 minutes from my house. I believe they are going to add the Impreza to a new line here in '14.

It's fast. That's all I can say.

Yes the legacy is being refreshed.

I actually drove a 2013 legacy while they went and got my forester in Ohio.

I highly recommend both vehicles. Very impressed.

And yes like someone said subaru continues to grow yearly. Great vehicles.

Keep in mind paddle shifters are only seen on higher trims.

Thanks. Now that you mention it I believe I had the two confused.

And Tribeca. But it's cancelled which is why legacy is taking over that line.

My wife had a Legacy GT....liked it until the blown head gasket/cracked head at 102,000 miles (had an extended warranty which ended at 100k). Did some reasearch...it seems that they had some cylinder head problems which were addressed 1/2 way through the model year...ours was built early in the year....no recall or anything...FU Subaru.

and Subaru is one of the last companies that offer a SUV with a standard 6 speed manual transmission, and the same goes for the rest of the automobiles in their US line up for 2014.

Can anybody else come up with another AWD SUV that come's standard with a manual for MY 2014 in the US?

Subaru would of fixed that EJ 22 block they did my mothers without asking during a service call they told her they had a recall and she had over 100K at the time. I believe they moved to the EJ25 during the evolution. Like all things it is the dealer that has to step up first for the customer.
