Honestly I would bore stroke it to a 383. Then just good set of heads, cam..............

Edit nvm on stroking it, its already bigger than 383

Whats wrong with the 400? Its a damn good motor that can easily make 500 ft/lbs with a good heads/cam combo.

There are various ways to tell if it is a 400 and not some 350 that he is trying to pass off I.E. block numbers, number of freeze plugs etc. Is it a 2-bolt main or 4-bolt? In the 400's case the 2-bolt was a stronger design than the 4-bolt. Try to find out the specs on the cam. If you want any info on the 406's don't hesitate to ask. Oh and ask him if he drilled out the steam holes in the heads. If he doesn't know what your talking about, chances are its not a 400.

Yes if you can just restore and rebuild. You only need buku hp if you plan on serious racing and just have to win win win.

Otherwise speeding in a vette is just asking for tickets.

How many miles on the motor? Find out how much he bored the cylinders over. The 400 is not the original motor BTW.

Thats not possible with the original motor. Maybe he put a 400 crank in it which would make it a 383.

update....the car had the 400ci swapped in and has about 3000-5000 miles on it only...the old man died before he could use it enough....it takes a while to heat up...u need to rev it till it idles without it turning off but once it gets going boy is this car a beast....when he cranked it up i shat my pants. car is rust free engine is clean and paint is good. i spoke to a friend who had the same problem with having to sit there for a few minutes till it got up and going and he said it just needs to be tuned because the fuel regulator is the problem. also the carb needs some work but nothing a good mechanic and a tune cant fix....let me know if you think it is a bad decision.

Still don't think it's a good idea. c3 was not a very good car. You could get a nice c4 for around that. If you find a 92 or newer manual it will have 300hp.
96 is even better, but will be around 12 to 14.

ugh but c4 is when the vette started getting ugly imo.

if someone has owned a c3 lmk....this thing looks like it just needs some love. the guy had some timeslips from his grandfathers runs at the track....ran low 13s on all 3 runs...pretty nice.

I do agree on the ug factor, but I was looking at the quality of the two over all. If It toots his horn tell to go for it and don't look back. I would say go drive a c4 (92 or newer) you'll see what I mean.
