![]() Apparently this was their flight path. Which is exactly what it shouldn't look like.

Definitely a land short accident. Whether pilot error/computer error/mechanical problem remains to be seen. SFO has auto-land technology but i heard the ILS is non-op.
Passenger witness said engines were sucking SF Bay water just prior to impact. Debris field after impact is mostly luggage ripped out of the cargo hold. Lucky survivors. |

If those PW4000's were sucking in water.... that could explain him hitting the seawall. Boeing's first fly-by-wire..... Lets see what their investigation shows. If they determine that it was not a pilot error.... then Boeing might have a problem. That is Not the kind of publicity they want.... especially since the 787 issues. |

why the low landing, yet to find out. What's baffling is the fires on the rooftop. Thoughts/prayers to all involved..

theres way too many things that will alert a pilot of something wrong....ill bet the plane was landing its self and the altimeter wasn't set right...that said the crew could have seen it wasn't right..

NTSB said throttles were at idle during the approach, advanced 1.5 seconds prior to impact. CVR indicated crew was concerned about decaying airspeed and commanded a go-around just prior to impact. Sounds of stick shaker also heard on the CVR.
No problems with the engines according to the press release. Sounds like it's leaning towards pilot error. |

Thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this accident.
Being a former Accident Investigator that just returned to flying the line now after medical leave, have learned long ago to try not to speculate and Armchair QB until all the Data comes in but yeah one thing for certain. It could have been so much worse. If the fuselage would have flipped and broke up. Gulp. ILS has been out of service for a while since they displaced the runway markings. Engines take awhile to spool up and should never be unspooled at idle that low to the ground. That's a lot of inertia headed downhill to overcome. The BA777 that crashed a few yrs back had a "possible" fuel contamination issue at app 700 ft AGL and landed short after engines did not respond to a command for more power.Fuel spilled upon impact but luckily did not ignite.

Once the NTSB gets to see what's on the FDR and CVR we'll know what really happened. Until then, it's all guess work. Only 2 guys know what really happened, and they aren't talking...yet. |

Yep, bug speed was 137 and NTSB said it "wasn't just a few knots" low either.
Trying not to speculate but the initial data released from the FDR isn't looking good for the pilots. That was the first time I saw that video. I'm sure the tower also has one pointing at the approach and departure ends of the airport. I was recently in a restaurant where that video was taken. That 777 was much lower than normal for SFO RWY28 approaches. Poor UAL747 pilot could only sit there and watch. |
