OP that is quite scary! I would've done the same thing but also called the cops and told them there's a crazy guy with a hammer in the streets. What if you heard later on that this guy killed someone and you could've prevented it with a simple 911 call? As far as shooting this person, shooting someone should be a final attempt to get away. OP did the right thing by speeding off. I'm all for gun rights, my house is well protected with them but they will only be used as a last resort.
Your final statement, referencing the use of a gun as a "last resort" is what separates responsible gun ownership from the others, who look for a situation that they could use a firearm against another human as a "golden opportunity" of sorts. It is these rotten apples that truly will spoil the bunch! I am glad the OP and his car, and the homeless guy are all ok, but the authorities do need to get the homeless guy some help before he hurts someone or gets himself hurt.

I guess Ruger, Stag, Colt and Magpul are the cool kids. (All rumored to be coming this way)

I'm sure they'll oblige with your request. As for the person that suggested 90% of homeless folks are legally insane, here you go. http://www.nationalhomeless.org/fact...al_Illness.pdf Now, cite your source.
I would imagine that that the recent downfall in the economy pushed some folks into being homeless that were only guilty of poor money management.

There's nothing more terrifying than the statement "I feel threatened, therefor I can legally shoot you and get away with it."

What if someone is more paranoid than others? What's the threshold for threat?

I don't know about anywhere else, but in Tennessee, I believe (not 100% sure) it is illegal to shoot anyone from a vehicle even in self-defense. Reasoning behind the law is that you have the opportunity to get away from any danger.

I guess now here in NY all hammers will be limited to 7 oz and made of foam rubber.
