It will be good for the both of them. Better to work together then against each other while the Asian companies work with each other.

Send a message via AIM to FenwickHockey65
They've already teamed up on existing 6-speed transmissions.

They should have teamed up with the makers of the Fast and Furious series also..

At some point, wouldn't continuously variable transmissions be a better idea?

This is exactly what I thought of.

are the new engine lines going to have extremely narrow torque ranges, or are we just going to have that many overdrive gears?

I won't complain about too many speeds, as long as they are smart enough to make it so that in sport mode it locks out the top 2 or 3 gears and holds the other lower gears longer. Also in manual mode I'd hate to have to tap shift through 8+ gears, so would be nice in manual mode to remove some of the in-between gears and only make 6 - 7 of them usable. Should be pretty easy to do with some smart programming in the TCM.

Just a matter of time before the Ford engineered portion of each transmission fails...

Good for fuel economy but it would suck on an automatic if you can feel the upshift or downshift every time.

You'll never feel the shift unless you are on it hard under WOT, and even then, with all the Torque management built in to the software these days, it still can be difficult to really get a good kick out of it. (thats where tuning comes in!) AT WOT, you want to feel those shifts...adds to the fun!

When it breaks on your Silverado, you can blame Ford. When your neighbors F-150 takes a dump, he can blame GM.
The programing strategy doesn't have to use all of the gears from bottom to top. Under hard accel, the transmission could go 1st, 3rd, 6th, 10th. It's all in how the engineers program it. The extra gears just help keep the engine in the optimal range at any speed and load.
