Report: Oshawa to build new Cadillac XTS, DTS dead

The days of Cadillac's big DTS sedan are numbered as the plant that builds it will soon be shut down and re-tooled. The Detroit Hamtramck assembly plant that builds the DTS and Buick Lucerne will switch over to building the Chevy Volt in 2010 and the current products are both long in the tooth.

The National Post is reporting that the new Cadillac flagship will be dubbed XTS and will be produced at the Oshawa assembly plant. It will be built alongside an updated Chevrolet Impala, the new Camaro and the Buick Regal. The DTS is a front-wheel drive car, but the XTS is expected to the share the Epsilon II platform with the Regal and the new Impala. As such, it will likely get all-wheel-drive at least as an option. For its part, the Regal will likely be a re-badged version of the Opel Insignia. The report goes on to say that Oshawa will produce a hybrid version of one of those offerings – a gas-electric Regal model is a reasonable bet.

Earlier reports had pegged the next Cadillac sedan as a model that would supplant both the DTS and the slow-selling STS, and although the NatPost article does not speak to this, it is reasonable to assume that the new XTS will result in the phase-out of both model lines. The new model line was reportedly put on hold back in August of last year, but it apparently has once again been given the go-ahead.

The XTS is scheduled to be launched in December 2011, with the new Impala coming in early 2013. Thanks to Ben for the tip!

Don't know about putting all their eggs in one basket. IMO, the plant is having difficulty meeting demands for the Camaro the way it is(whether it's supplies, delivery, etc.). Although, the demand for them may not be as high, shouldn't the plant be dedicated?

If I ran GM, I'd have a camaro plant in the East and West coast as well. Nothing like taking over the country...muhhahahahaha

Cadillac is shifting towards being FWD biased again. I don't think that's a good idea.

Cadillac still has a sub-CTS vehicle built on the SWB Alpha platform. Next-gen CTS is on LWB Alpha.

6th gen. Camaro's on an alternative version of Alpha being developed by Holden.

Answer was spur of the moment to a 'Benedict' response that was given.

Fan of both really, just expressing opinions(you know everyone's got 'em), Just like to see GM cash in on this before the hype dwindles..
. Not a big fan of only one plant working OT, while others close, orders sit and wait, customers getting hosed on prices due to market supply & demand..productivity, I say..

No domestic car in my garage yet, as the ecomomy made sure of that. I'm hoping that'll change with this GM concept turned reality..

Well you have a big assumption going and that is that the Oshawa Flex plant is at full capacity. They are only running on one shift, not 3 right now.

Assuming that they go ahead and add another shift, what do you suppose they do with the extra Camaros that will pile up in the yard once the initial demand subsides?

A second or third vehicle will allow the flex plant to build according to demand but first you have to get those other models in there. Then having the plant run 24 hours a day makes perfect sense.

Look around you..you see Camaros littering any dealer lots? GM is losing perspective buyers daily because of the 'unavailability' of the car. And w/ the economy the way it is, I for one do not see paying rediculous prices for the chance to 'have it now'.

..as for the 24 hr operations..wait and see what happens..

Oshawa was looking pretty bare about a year ago, product-wise...this is good!

And AWD is a good choice.

I'll tend to agree with this a bit. The economy is so bad right now that sales will taper off after the enthusists pre / early orders are filled. It should continue strong sales thru the entire vehicle life. But I don't think they will be able sell 24 hour shift worth.

As fas as this XTS is sounds good and grats to the plant. If UAW was not so messed up maybe they would not have to take cars to CAW. Not an anti CAW thing I just mean it's a domestic rant for USA brand.

Yep. It's one of GM's premiere plants so it's nice to see the renewed commitment. I knew there have been big wigs touring the plant for consideration of future product assembly over the past year but you are never sure until someone makes an announcement.

I think it has more to do with the plants performance than what union the workers fall under. Oshawa is the GM plant to beat for quality and workers dedication. The exceptional work from the Oshawa employees is what got them the 3 new models and the Camaro.

I have spoken to many levels of management within GM's production group and they cannot say enough good things about Oshawa.
