When you say 12 are you talking 12.9 or closer to 12.1 because that makes a big difference for a manufacturer.

I just don't see how GM could offer a streetable drag car to compete with the like of a 2013 GT500 without it costing a pretty penny.

Like I said before maybe beating the shelby isn't the goal the OP had in mind, but in that case GM already makes cars that will compete.

right now the 5.0 and the ss are nearly a dead heat. an optional 7.0 in the ss would seal the deal for the camaro and just be a down right sweet car.

Yes, but that doesn't mean they didn't upgrade the powertrain to do it.
The diff and axles will have to be stronger than an SS, even on a road course.

well they already easily run a 12.9 with the ls3 and up to 12.5. so an ls7 should hit the 12 flat mark.

in the supposed quote from GM it said that it does not have the heavy center section and axles from the ZL1.

If that's your goal then the LS7 in a lighter package should do that. Really though then you are talking about a Z/28 with out the expensive brakes, wheels, and tires. Maybe loose the front splitter and areo package although they may too help at a drag strip.

yeah lose the brakes and shocks. I just don't need those expensive parts for driving around town. the FE4 suspension is plenty adequate for normal driving.

What's funny about your request is that it sounds like the car that many of the complainers of what the Z/28 should have been were expecting it to be.

Road racers and drag racer unite. You're looking for the same car.

well historically the z\28 was a road racing car, correct? so really the new z\28 is what it should be. the ZL1 however is not true to it's heritage.

i don't care what they call it to be honest. ls7 ss is fine with me.

This quote states you can drag race the car ....

"This is not simply a straight-line 0-60 drag strip car, although you can use it for that as well." per Mark Ruess (president of GM North America)

It would be easier to start with a stock, street legal SS and do a COPO conversion to it.
