I disagree... I carry a compact and a full size 1911. Compare a 1911 to just about anything, full size to full size, or compact to compact. You'll probably be surprised.

I carry a full size 1911 IWB all the time. The weight is not much different from a glock 17. The grip length is a bit long for a tuck able holster, but that is what the compact is for.

For the 400 or less range, there are quite a few options. I think you can even get some of the low end Sigs for that price. My advice though, is to save up some extra and buy a good quality handgun. Don't skimp out on it. If you're looking for something to CCW, just make sure it's the right size. It doesn't need to be tiny, but a 1911 (for example) would be a terrible CCW gun lol
What would you suggest I bump my range up to and what would you suggest in that range?

It's very hard to try and suggest a gun for some one. The best way is to go to a local range and try several and see what works best for you as far as feel. You should bump it up to 5-600 IMO

Put some in youre hand. See how they feel in youre hand comfort wise etc. Then go to the range and shoot them. Its just like shoes, you dont buy a size 10 when you wear a 12, and in color blue to go with a brown outfit.

It is very hard to choose a gun for someone else. I definitely would get it into the 5-600 dollar range.

I'm a sig brat. The one I plan on (eventually) using for CCW is a P229, which is slightly smaller than the 226 and the full sized 1911. I want a slightly smaller gun to conceal. That's an 800-1000 dollar handgun.

The other option that I think I would like (but have never shot) is their p2022 (which comes in 9mm and 40mm). That's a 400-600 dollar gun.

Prices vary wildly depending on where you get it from and how much the gun dealer is marking them up. I have seen them for mid 400's, and know some people that own and love them.

The Springfield XD series is a great handgun, and are in the 600 dollar range as well. I think the XD9 retails at like 599.

Either way, I would agree with CHMSC about bumping your price up tot he 5-600 dollar range. Don't cheap out on a handgun anymore than you would cheap out on a mod for your car. I would also suggest finding a range that will rent you a gun that has a fairly wide selection, so that you can fire and hold some of the models you might be looking at.

Even OWB my compact hides well. OWB Full size hides adequate.

Does Texas have a petition site like the white house does?

I'd like to start a petition to allow Open Carry in Texas. Thoughts?

Open carry makes you a target for both Criminals as well as others! WHY? Other than trying to be "COOL" or show off would you want to carry openly? It takes away any element of surprise in a potential situation.

It's not about trying to be "cool." I have a very difficult time trying to conceal carry because I don't wear the kind of clothes that are conducive to effectively concealing a handgun on my person.

The only time I'm ever wearing anything that's effective is in the winter, and in San Antonio, that lasts all of 2 weeks...

And do you really think criminals would target someone specifically because of the handgun on their hip?

Why do you want to surprise a criminal? I'd rather they just leave me alone in the first place...

The element of surprise might save your life! When I took my CC class one of the attendees had asked how someone being car jacked at gunpoint could have any chance of defense having to draw and fire. The officer doing the training shared the statistic that the element of surprise gives you a 0.9 second advantage. The perp has to analyze the situation of you drawing on him and formulate his response. He said that they are trained to be aware of this fact when entering into an unknown situation, with guns drawn, that they are statistically already at a disadvantage.

You're telling me a criminal would approach and try to carjack a person even if they could clearly see a holster on that person's hip?

Yeah I agree that open carry doesn't make you any more of a target. It does diminish the surprise factor, but lets be honest... if a criminal comes in to rob a Starbucks or something like that, and sees a dozen people in there with a handgun on their hip, do you REALLY think they are going to go through with it? How many solo cops do you hear about getting assaulted randomly? They don't conceal. The only cops that get targeted are by people that have it in their head that they specifically want to mess with a cop.
