The thing I would miss out on is getting my retirement in a lump sum. They claim this is the last time they will offer it.

You need to talk to a tax person I know there are rules on early with drawl anytime before 591/2. So do some checking. maybe roll it over to a Roth/IRA.

I would think that if you retire you would not get severance pay anyway I thought you only get that if you get a layoff. As far as retirement at 57 how easy would it be for you to get another job? Are there jobs available in your field where you live? Not to mention it could be tough to start as a new employee somewhere else after 35 years at the same job. With that much seniority could you avoid the layoff?

26 weeks severance is part of the deal. Seniority means nothing. It never has. I would not look for a job in my field. I would gladly be that old man mopping a floor at a school !

Negative no union. Only in California and New York. A union vote last year went 50% for and 50% against.

The only way I would take a job in my field is with a company NCR used to own, but only for a few years.

Well in that case you may want to take the severance and lump sum retirement and see what is out there. I would agree with Skip however and look into any tax implications but you can roll it into an IRA if you have to.

The financial advisor thing has been done. There are three of us in my area. One guy is taking the retirement. The other guy is still undecided like me. Out our group of ten people the youngest quit three weeks ago. We continually get new customers which gets harder to service them no one being hired. All three of us old farts suffer from the back door trots during our week of on call. I think it could benefit my health to get the heck out of dodge. Oh yeah something else ,tracking devices will be put on our vans again very shortly. It only gets worse!

It's funny how the names we have for things changes over time.
For instance:

In the 1930s it was called "The Great Depression".

Now it's called "The Economic Recovery".

ROBOSSRS, after everything I have read, it sounds to me like you should run for it while you still can. Take the money and invest it somehow. I know it's got to be hard after 35 years to make any kind of move, but I'm guessing I don't have to tell you what they think you're worth. It doesn't sound like any of your available paths will be easy. But I know exactly what it's like to sit at company and watch it crumble from the inside right before your eyes. That's what I was enduring up until I lost my job last month. We were slowly shedding people until it got to the point that I would be doing sales one day, marketing the next, and then out to the warehouse to be the shipping clerk for a few days. Needless to say I only got one paycheck.
Anyone that knows me, knows that I saw it coming for awhile. But it happened far sooner that we had anticipated. Of course management would never admit that anything was wrong. They just said everything is going to be okay! They were so backward that the CEO would still repeat the tired mantra that books were recession proof. He's a complete idiot and a coward that wouldn't face me when I got my layoff notice.
So I know you're probably trapped somewhere between your comfort zone, and the message in the writing on the wall. And trying to decide on what to do between those to forces. I'm from the Rust Belt myself, so I'm guessing jobs are not plentiful. And I have no doubt that your age weighs heavy on your mind. Age discrimination is very real. I honestly wish I could give you happy reassurances, but I really don't feel confident in anything I can tell you. Plus I have no doubt that my perspective is more than somewhat clouded by my current circumstances. I wish you all the best and hope you can come to some decision that puts you on a good path. One that leaves you comfortable, healthy and happy.

I apologize if my tone got darker as I went on. I didn't intend for it to go that way. I just realized that I am still angry and getting angrier as I look around and see more and more people I know, losing their jobs. And the most disturbing trend is that it is predominantly people our age and experience level.

I feel I can find some kind of job. I just don't know what they are up to. My theory after being in business over one hundred years is NCR wants all contractors. We do work for Wal Mart, Target , Kmart, Lowes, Home Depot, Limited stores, Darden, Chiles, AT&T, plus many banks, the list goes on and on.( At least the Blockbuster machines will be gone.)

On the other hand the writing is on the wall there could be layoffs. The severance pay in April will go from 26 weeks to only 8 weeks. What makes it tough is being at this job for almost 35 years. Any ideas ?

I kinda have to agree with this. It's hard to get a job right now that offers benefits, but if you see the writing on the wall and you're getting an incentive, go for it. I would just make sure I have a job before I leave if I were you. I know Lowe's is hiring in some areas for seasonal help as spring is "around the corner". If you are handy at all, you can probably get your foot in the door, then hope for something permanent with benefits. Best of luck..............

LBM That pic is epic! LOL I bet you got a good laugh from that. Good humpday Morning crew. Brrrrrrrrrr it's chilly this morning. I was up until 11:30 doing work notes last night so I'm tired today. I'm glad it's hump day though. This weekend we have our first club outing. We are supposed to Camarovan up to Louisville to the Carl Casper car show where both Music City & Derby City Camaro clubs have displays with some of our nicest club car in the show. It may be rainy that morning which would inhibit some of our members from going so I hope the forcast changes for the better. I need to see my comrads. Even Mike won't take his Camaro if it rains & I really want to drive SOLO. HAGD everyone.
