So there I was... with 6 cops in front of my house...

Like the title says.

Here's how it went down. Loud knock on the door. The room-mate answers, and then I hear "Alex, come here and see this!". To which I respond "Hold the **** on, I'm doing something!". Then he yells "NO! Right now, this is a big deal!". So I walk out to the front door, step outside, and there they are; What is apparently the entire sheriff's department. 2 officers in front of us, 1 on the left side of the house, 1 on the right side of the house, and 2 in the street with some guy.

Rewind about 20 minutes.

My room-mate and I are talking, and I go to check the mail. After pulling the mail out of the box, I notice that the USPS person has miserably failed (I mean, they can't even keep that place open on Saturdays amirite?!). There is a package in the box that has a different address. In order to paint this picture, we'll just say that my street address is 3840, and the package is addressed to 3740. So what do I do? Like a good neighbor, I pull all the mail out of the box, and start walking down the street to that address to give them their missing package...

I get to the house it belongs to, and just as I arrive, I see a couple in a small pickup truck slow down on the street and start backing into its driveway. I give them a friendly nod, hold up the package, open their mailbox, and place the package inside. Then I journey back down the street.

Fast forward to present.

The cop asks for my ID and my room-mates. We tell them they are inside and we are asked to retrieve them. These cops look PISSED by the way, and we're still totally clueless why they are even there. So the "main cop" asks me "Do you have someone else's mail?". And I tell him "OH! No. I got someone else's mail in the mailbox and I walked it down the street to put it in their mailbox.". He looks very confused for a moment and says "That man over there said he saw you walking back up this way on the street, looking at some mail, and then go into the house.".

I'm a little confused now. The man out in the street is not one of the people from the truck. NO IDEA who that dude is. So then I have to explain to the cop that I had ALL of the mail from my box, walked it ALL down the street, placed the package that did not belong to me in the proper box, and walk back with the rest of my mail. APPARENTLY, this guy that called the cops on my (20 minutes prior) had been getting his mail stolen. He called the cops to say that he saw me stealing mail from this other box (even though I clear-as-day place mail INTO the box). So every cop in the county decided to come out to get me!

Man... try to do the right thing these days. No good deed goes unpunished.

On the plus side... the female cop (who was kind of cute too!) started smiling a little bit after the story cleared up. She looked like she thought the whole thing was a little ridiculous too haha.

you're lucky they didn't perform a no-knock raid and kill both of you just for the fun of it

That's crazy. Gotta be careful though man. It is illegal to put anything in another person's mailbox, even their own mail. I would have left it on their doorstep.

First thing I thought was explosives in package! Glad it wasn't that! Yea I wouldn't have touched the mailbox either, especially when someone was pulling into the driveway. Might as well hand it to them.

Have received other's mail several times over the years. Our solution is to just leave it in our mailbox and then raise the red flag. The next day they will take it out and deliver to the correct address - or so I believe - but, either way it is gone and we don't have to chase down the rightful owner.
